The Southern California Trojans were among the top teams in the country to begin the season. USC Trojans
But as the season progressed, the Trojans would go from being No. 1 ranked overall to being unranked. And to make matters worse, head coach Lane Kiffin is now on the hot seat with the chance he’ll lose his job.
The Trojans should reevaluate his job status after his team did not show up to the Bruit Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets wanted to be at the game more than the Trojans did.
Georgia Tech was able to beat Southern California, 21-7, in yesterday’s game.
With the loss, the Trojans fell to 7-6 on the season. They started the season 6-1, before losing going 1-5 in the rest of their season. And they are the first school to start the season No. 1 overall, and then lose six games.
Senior quarterback Matt Barkeley missed the game against Georgia Tech with an injury and was not cleared to play. He injured his shoulder after Thanksgiving against UCLA – a game in which UCLA won.
The Trojans could not contain the Ramblin’ Wrecks triple-option attack. The Yellow Jackets had 294 rushing yards.
The Trojans could only muster 205 total yards, while Georgia Tech had 369 total yards. Trojans quarterback Max Wittek had 107 passing yards.
Wittek threw a 9-yard touchdown to Silas Reed for their lone score. Reed had three receptions for 14 yards and the touchdown. And he also had 17 carries for 88 yards.
This is the second 7-6 record that Kiffin has had in his college coaching career. In 2009, in his long season with the Tennessee Volunteers, he had a 7-6 record and lost in the Chick-fil-A bowl.
He is now 0-2 in Bowl games in the college ranks, and many coaches are judged on what have you done for me lately. Lately, Kiffin hasn’t proved that he could win a bowl game.
In 2010 and 2011, the Trojans were ineligible for a bowl game due to NCAA sanctions. In 2010, the team went 8-5, and then last year, the team went 10-2.
The Trojans were first in the South Division in the Pac-12 last year, but that is not important since they were not eligible to play for a conference championship or a bowl game. Yet, even with the 10 wins last season, Kiffin is only 25-13 in the college ranks.
Kiffin will have to prove to the Trojans management he is worth keeping around for another year. If they keep him, he will go into next season on the hot seat.
He would have to build this team back up to prominence again since they haven’t been this bad since the 2001 season. In that year, the team finished 6-6 and lost to Utah in the Las Vegas Bowl.

Robert Woods seems bitter that Lane Kiffin didn’t get him the ball enough
USC junior wide receiver Robert Woods announced after Monday’s Sun Bowl that he would be foregoing his senior season to enter the NFL draft. The announcement came as no surprise for a few reasons. One, Woods had three big seasons for USC and had little left to accomplish in college. Two, he became a secondary option on the offense behind sophomore Marqise Lee, and he probably didn’t...
"Quit On for USC"
Lane Kiffin has provided thousands of grist-words for this mill. Today he adds more, courtesy of Coaches Hot Seat.
USCw put on a pitiful performance yesterday in the Sun Bowl against Georgia Tech. For the few minutes that I watched, Tech played its typical brand of noncontact defense. In fact, at one point I saw a linebacker (or DB) close on a runner at the line of scrimmage and...

Referee blows FG call at Hyundai Sun Bowl (Video)
An official at the Hyundai Sun Bowl made a horrible call during the first quarter of the Hyundai Sun Bowl on New Year's Eve when a field goal attempt by USC Trojans kicker Andre Heidari was initially called good even though it was shanked wide left.
The official underneath the left goalpost was in the best position to make the call as to whether the USC field goal attempt...
Hyundai Sun Bowl: USC Trojans Football vs. Georgia Tech
The USC Trojans take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on New Year’s Eve in the Hyundai Sun Bowl, the culmination of disappointing seasons for both squads. The 7-5 Trojans fell far, fast, after beginning the year as the preseason No. 1. Georgia Tech had to appeal for an NCAA waiver that would allow them to even go to a bowl this season after finishing with a losing record. The...
A “streaker” made his way onto the field during the end of the Sun Bowl before being stopped
The Sun Bowl in El Paso got kind of boring in the fourth quarter with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets easily handling the USC Trojans. To space up the Hyundai Sun Bowl, a guy decided to be fulling clothed and run through the middle of the field. Of course stadium security got to the guy quickly and he will probably spend some time in the drunk tank. Play was halted and the entire...

Injury won't keep USC's Fontan out of Pac-12 opener
USC men's basketball Coach Kevin O'Neill said X-rays showed that point guard Jio Fontan sprained his left thumb in the first half of USC's 63-61 overtime win over Dayton on Sunday and that Fontan will play in the Trojans' Pac-12 Conference opener against Stanford on Thursday with the thumb taped.
"He practiced," O'Neill said Wednesday. "He'...
Will Trojans be ready for the Sun Bowl?
As it turns out, Matt Barkleys career as a USC Trojan is over. USC fans last glimpse of him in action is being helped off of the field at the Rose Bowl after suffering a shoulder injury on a hard hit from UCLA outside linebacker Anthony Barr.
When USC (7-5) takes the field on Monday in El Paso against Georgia Tech (6-7) in the Hyundai Sun Bowl, theyll do so without Barkley, it was...
