Few things have gone right for Illinois offensively over the last month, but the Fighting Illini have been able to stay competitive thanks to junior defensive ends Whitney Mercilus and Michael Buchanan, an aggressive one-two punch that No.15 Wisconsin will have to deal with Saturday in Champaign.
Last year, the Fighting Illini football team reached field goal range 29 times. Placekicker Derek Dimke converted 24 kicks and expected similar success in 2011. But he hasn't had nearly the opportunities this year. He wishes he could have done more to help the team, and he regrets how rapidly his career is coming to an end.

Illinois wide receiver Kenny Knight has pleaded not guilty to charges of battery and resisting a police officer. Knight appeared in court Thursday after being arrested after a fight Saturday night. He's accused of punching a man in the head and then running when police spotted him. Another football player, Jordan Frysinger, was also arrested.

The Fighting Illini football team, so thrilled with a perfect 6-0 getaway to begin the season, has been facing extreme adversity lately. A four game losing streak, accompanied by a sudden collapse of a once-potent offense, was complicated last weekend by a late-night incident that ended the season for a team leader. Yet, there may be a glimmer of hope despite the dark clouds.
The Fighting Illini basketball team begins the Cancun Challenge, hosting Lipscomb University Thursday night. The Bisons have some exciting guard play and could give the Illini trouble in the back court. The Illini are heavy favorites; they hope to win while also continuing their learning process.

The Fighting Illini swimming and diving team finished its first day of action at the Northwestern Invitational Friday night in second place after tallying 216 points through seven events. The Michigan State volleyball team (19-9, 8-8 Big Ten) returns home for the first time in four contests when it hosts No. 7 Illinois (24-3, 13-3 Big Ten) and Northwestern (14-12, 6-8 Big Ten) this weekend.
