msuspartans.com It’s the time of year when we all start talking about the upcoming football season. With spring practice underway, everyone is wondering who the starting quarterback for Michigan State is going to be.  Many people were disappointed with the way the Spartans football season went last year and per usual, it was the quarterback, Andrew Maxwell, who was the scapegoat. It was Maxwell’s first year as the starter, and he found it hard to live up to the high standard that Kirk Cousins had set. But, Maxwell’s inexperience wasn’t the only factor that played a role in the upsetting season. For one, the offensive line was continuously shuffling due to injuries that continued throughout the season. Second, Dan Conroy missed essential field goals that decided some games by three points and less. Fans were impressed with redshirt sophomore Connor Cook, who replaced Maxwell in the midst of the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl and played a decent number of snaps. He was widely credited for 17-16 comeback victory against TCU. Although head coach Mark Dantonio has made it clear that the starting job is open, it is not just between Connor Cook and Andrew Maxwell. Redshirt freshman Tyler O’Connor also has a fair shot at the starting position. According to the Lansing State Journal, O’Connor believes he has a slight advantage over Maxwell and Cook, in regards to the fact he is not afraid of being hit. With all three QBs being rotated with the first team offense, it is going to create a tough decision for the coaches as each player has unique qualities. There is a lot to consider, but ultimately it will be the best of the three who will earn the starting position. Andrew Maxwell & the rest of the QBs traded in red jerseys for green ones on Friday, becoming “live” for the defense. twitter.com/MSU_Football/s… — Spartan Football (@MSU_Football) March 24, 2013 When you’ve become the best at one level, strive to be the best at the next.. #ItNeverStops — Tyler O’Connor (@TylerOConnor7) March 21, 2013 #KeepBelieving — Connor Cook (@Connor_Cook03) April 7, 2013 Andrew Maxwell will be a good QB this year #boldprediction — Sam Waalkes (@SamWaalkes2) April 12, 2013
