I’d like to say this is a good problem for Mark Dantonio, but I don’t speak with that much confidence. With less than two weeks before the Michigan State Spartans open their season against the Western Michigan Broncos, they are without a starting quarterback. In fact, the decision is getting murkier the longer the process goes into summer practices. When the Spartans broke Spring Practice a few months ago, last year’s starter and fifth-year senior Andrew Maxwell and sophomore Connor Cook appeared to make it a two-horse race. Cook led the Spartans comeback in last year’s Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl. Maxwell has the most experience, starting all of last year’s games after being Kirk Cousins back up for two years. While not ideal, it seemed as if a little bit of a QB competition prior to the 2013 season would be a good thing to set the Spartans straight and solidify the offense. Problem? Neither separated themselves and redshirt freshman Tyler O’Connor stepped up, adding his name into the mix. It suddenly became a three-QB race. Do you go with the veteran in Maxwell? What about Cook and his ability to keep plays alive? Then there is O’Connor, the better [...]

EAST LANSING — On Wednesday, the jury spoke and the verdict was in. In this case, however, the jury was the Michigan State football team and the verdict was the captains for the upcoming season. (Eds: APNewsNow.) Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio says he cannot reveal which of the four quarterbacks competing for the Spartans' starting job will take the first snap in the opener. Max Bullough: Indeed Mr. Michigan State Spartans

Michigan State has a tenacious defense taking to the gridiron this fall. And the leader of that fearsome defense is OLB Max Bullough; who blood is as green and white as it gets. He’s a third-generation Spartan, following in the footsteps of his grandfather Hank (guard, 1952-54) and father Shane (linebacker, 1983-86) who played football at Michigan State. Bullough has the word “SPARTAN”...

Terry emerges as QB contender for Michigan State

The storyline for the starting quarterback competition in East Lansing has apparently undergone a revision. True freshman Damion Terry has gone from drowning in the playbook just two weeks ago to adjusting quite swimmingly. Terry, from Erie (Pa.) Cathedral Prep School, is a dual-threat quarterback who was expected to make a big impact at Michigan State as early as 2014. However...

In sports, excitement is an element not defined or quantified by a statistic, but when it’s seen and experienced, the game changing attributes it can bring become obvious. Damion Terry, a freshman quarterback from Erie, Pennsylvania has been hard to ignore early in Michigan State’s football camps for these reasons. After initially looking destined for a redshirt which would guarantee...
