The University of Alabama doesn't play around when it comes to its trademark.

No, not even when a local bakery, who are huge supporters of the Crimson Tide, decides to create elephant-shaped cookies with a script "A" on them. Seriously? Yeah, seriously.

From The Big Lead:

Mary’s Cake and Pastries received a cease and desist letter, and a request for documentation of how many $1.75 cookies had been sold so Alabama and CLC could collect damages.

Wait, what?

The modest bakery wasn't the only party Alabama and the Collegiate Licensing Company went after, though. They also spent more than $1.4 million on a failed lawsuit against artist Daniel Moore for depicting the Alabama uniform in artwork. Oh, and the school is also trying to assert control over the houndstooth patter, because legendary coach Bear Bryant used to wear it.
The school has since apologized after the news became public. But it's probably too little and too late at this point because the damage has already been done.

  • Typical big college tactics. Just earlier this year, my old high school, the Cedar Hill Longhorns, had to re-configure their logo because the University of TeaSippers (Texas) sent them a cease and dissist or be hit with an infringement lawsuit.
I may be a Texan but I can't stand that school and that act just cemented my feelings even more....Geaux Tigers!!!

  • Thank You Jon Solomon, writer for AL.com for putting this very insidious matter into the light for all to see. Unlike the Daniel Moore fight, the attacks on the LETTERMEN of the IRON BOWL and LETTERMEN of the SEC have included extortion, cyber-bullying, slander, personal attacks and character assassination. Stay tuned.

RUMORS & GOSSIP

76ers fans can get free tickets with a box of Mac & Cheese

The Philadelphia 76ers, not surprisingly, are not drawing well so far this season. The team is 0-5 at home (0-11 overall) and are bringing in an average of 14,856 fans per game, bad enough for 28th in NBA attendance rankings, although the fact that nearly 15,000 fans each game speaks to the undying dedication of...Read More The post Philadelphia 76ers fans can get two free tickets...

Grizzlies players battling team-wide stomach virus

The stomach bug is alive and well in the Memphis Grizzlies locker room.   Seven players are questionable for Friday night’s game against the Boston Celtics because of a stomach virus that kept five players, including Tony Allen, out of their game Wednesday night. The two new players with the bug are Courtney Lee and Jarnell Stokes. The Grizzlies were without Beno...

ESPN suspends analyst from Twitter for defending evolution

In a headline so improbable it seems like it could only come from a “Seinfeld” episode, ESPN suspended baseball analyst Keith Law from Twitter for getting into an argument with Curt Schilling about evolution. Last week, Schilling, who is also an analyst for ESPN, went on Twitter to discuss and disprove evolution. Schilling responded to...Read More

Randy Moss thought call about trade to Patriots was prank

Randy Moss was so surprised to receive a phone call from Bill Belichick notifying him he was traded to the Patriots back in 2007, he says he thought it was a prank. Why would the Nationals want to trade Jordan Zimmermann?

When the reports first surfaced that the Washington Nationals had put Jordan Zimmermann on the trade block, it just didn’t seem to make any sense. Why would the defending NL East champions move their ace just over a month after he completed his best season in the Majors? Well, according to SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo, there is talk around the league that the primary motivation...

Kobe won't take paycut, hints at retiring after contract ends

Kobe Bryant’s days as an NBA player might be numbered. The Los Angeles Lakers shooting guard hinted that he wouldn’t play past his last contract — which expires after next season — when he criticized hometown discounts saying they were a “big coup” for owners. Kobe insinuates that he won't be playing beyond his current contract. — Baxter Holmes (@BaxterHolmes...

Pete Carroll: Marshawn Lynch is 'our guy'

I’m not sure if this really qualifies as breaking news unless I put “duh” in the title, but the Seattle Seahawks want Marshawn Lynch back next season. This should come as a surprise to exactly zero people who understand Lynch’s value for Seattle, but don’t take my word for it. Listen to what head coach Pete Carroll told USA Today about the rumors that the Seahawks will...

Eric Bledsoe: Kentucky could beat the 76ers

The winless Philadelphia 76ers take on the Phoenix Suns tonight at the Wells Fargo Center and much of the discussion lately has been whether the “tanking” Sixers could beat college powerhouse University of Kentucky. While Kentucky coach John Calipari has stated his team would get crushed by any NBA team, former Wildcat guard Eric Bledsoe believes that not only would Kentucky...

Kendall Wright lobs hilarious shot at Dez Bryant

Tennessee Titans wide receiver Kendall Wright has seen his production decline a great deal from a season ago. After putting up 94 receptions for nearly 1,100 yards last year, the former first-round pick has tallied just 43 receptions through 10 games this season. But don’t expect Wright to pull a Dez Bryant and lose it on the field during the game (via The Tennessean). All...
