Johnny Manziel has gone from a relatively unknown college football player to a celebrity athlete in a matter of months. His legend grew after he helped Texas A&M beat national champion Alabama at Tuscaloosa in November, and his celebrity status was cemented after he won the Heisman Trophy in December. With the increased fame has come increased scrutiny. Manziel has made headlines for going clubbing after winning his Heisman, sitting courtside at a Mavericks-Heat NBA game, and flashing cash inside an Oklahoma casino. Though Manziel may not have broken any rules in those instances, he may have generated unwanted attention that Texas A&M would like him to avoid.

Texas A&M’s athletic director met with Manziel and his parents to talk about how to best handle his new fame.

“I told them he’s no longer a freshman, and he’s no longer a sophomore, junior or senior. He is a ‘Heisman,’” athletic director Eric Hyman told the San Antonio Express-News on Sunday.

Hyman stressed how life-changing it is to be a Heisman Trophy winner.

“It’s (about) education, and we’ve got to help the family and Johnny with the transition into being a Heisman award winner,” Hyman said. “There are things you have to learn, and we have to help him with that.”

“That’s a special fraternity, but you also have to understand (Manziel) is 20 years old,” Hyman said. “It’s a tremendous responsibility — but it is a responsibility.”

Does this mean all the fun is gone now that Manziel’s had a meeting inside the principal’s office? Let’s hope not. He has been one of the most entertaining athletes over the past few months. Unfortunately, this sounds a heck of a lot like when the Patriots told Rob Gronkowksi that the “summer of Gronk” was over.

  • Minors CANNOT drink with parent's consent in TX. If they are in a restaurant they are not able to drink or the restaurant stand to receive a fine even with a parent there. If TABC is there the parent can even get a "contributing to minors" violation. Please know the facts not urban legend and the way it was in the past!

  • Johnny Football, is no where near the level of Broadway Joe, or Kenny the Snake Stabler. Let him enjoy himself. The world is coming way to fast at us today, this kid can't even have fun and enjoy himself. At some point the media should consider giving kids in college at least the benefit of the doubt. They should be off limits, they don't get paid. When they bite apple and cash a check, all bets are off your now the property of the world as people want to know what your all about. Let's leave the kids alone, the litmus test is whether or not the player is getting paid. That makes the stars on any team Lane Kiffin coaches free game. Lane wouldn't be able to field a team if he recruited based upon his charm, you know anyone that has a choice wouldn't play for him unless they were cashing big checks.

  • Excellent action taken by the Aggie AD. Now is the time (offseason, etc.) to discuss the situation and agree on certain parameters that reflect the best interests of JM and TAM. The AD is correct, being a Heisman winner puts the individual and university under a more intense spotlight, which is a good thing if handled correctly.

  • Evidently, you have never heard of integrity or morals. Maybe you think Chas Barkley is cool... You want someone associated with your university in a positive role. If gambling was performed in church on Sunday mornings, then I believe you have no problem. But it's not. Generally, gambling is associated with alcohol, prostitution, and illegal activities. As an athletic director in a major D-1 university, you have every right to demand low-key activities from scholarship recipients. If he had been working with kids at a Boys Club or YMCA, NO ONE would complain. Stop and think... grow up... be young, have fun, but be smart...

  • He's having innocent fun and the news media makes a bigger deal out of it than it is. Nothing wrong with gambling in a legitimate atmosphere...what does that have to do with integrity and morals? That's only your anal opinion, that it is associated with alcohol, prostitution, and illegal activities...not everyone looks at it in that manner. Yes, he needs to be careful about the image, but even the fact that he met with the AD should have been confidential!

  • Aggies hold themselves to a higher standard. Although he has done nothing wrong, he is drawing unwanted attention to himself and the university. The AD was justified in his actions and is trying to protect Johnny and the university.

  • He is a Heisman Trophy winner. The man, whether he is 20 or 40 has an image, as a Heisman winner, that he NEEDS to uphold, if for no OTHER reason, simply because of all the younger players in junior high and high school who may picture themselves in his shoes in years to come. Johnny Football REALLY NEEDS to set an example for these younger athaletes.

  • You can't force maturity onto someone. He's a kid, getting a lot of attention. He was bound to slip-up sooner or later anyway, but let's face it, he's still really young. Leave him be. He'll most likely figure all this out on his own soon enough, and then turn pro early. He may be young but he doesn't need a nanny.

  • This proves that the Heisman is also about integrity and that Manti should have received it. There would not have been these issues with him. He and his parents would not have been called into Swarbrick's office. Manti knows how to represent himself, his family and his university.

  • Class, morals, judgement...if that is part of the Heisman qualifications...and it may or may not really be part of the formula...Manti or AJ would have been a better choice. I think Johnny is an excellent player...just not quite ready on the maturity front to handle the spotlight...which is fine..he's young...the Heisman qualifications should be looked at...perhaps, best offensive player, best represents the game of football, etc...because we all know that the defensive players really aren't in the running...Make the judging standards public -- then -- all the speculations and squabbling can end...Just sayin!!!

  • It's funny how Johnny can go have fun and hangout in casinos and not be labeled a thug or drug dealer? Oh...he is just a kid, this is true, but can't understand the double standards when it comes to minority athletes. If this was anybody else the word thug would have been included in most of the comments and not many would have said that he is just a kid having fun. I like this kid and think he is talented and deserves to have fun as long as it is clean and legal but so does others!

  • No one should be denied the experience and privilege that college life offers a person. The fact that he won a trophy doesn't mean that he should make dramatic changes in his character and not embrace the best four years of his young life. Has he ever stabbed, beaten, raped, drugged, shot or maimed someone prior to this trophy? Does winning a trophy mean this behavior is going to start? If he was an exemplary student before he will continue down the same path. For those of you who believe that a night on the town with friends at a casino will lead to this behavior...wake the F up. Leave the KID alone and he will be fine and that goes for the school as well...have faith.

  • Too much fame, too much attention, comming too quickly. Sometimes not a good thing. Sometimes a younger man is not mature enough to handle it in a way that brings honor to himself, and his school. I really don't think being seen in a casino flashing money around is the right way to command the respect that a Heisman winner should get from his peers.

  • They selected Johnny as the Heisman representative, and they now have Johnny as the Heisman representative. If they didn't want Johnny they should have selected someone else and not try to make Johnny into something he's not, after the fact. It's kind of like taking a good athelete and making them into a super athelete through steroids or some other unrealistic, phony balony, which this world is to full of already. It is what it is, accept Johnny for what he is, great and not so great, and quit your snivelling. I say it's Texas A&M and the Heisman group that need to "Grow Up".
