If and when Tyler Bray moves on to play ball in the NFL, he can officially say he is getting paid to play football. At the moment, Bray is on a full scholarship at Tennessee, which most people consider to be a totally different concept than getting paid to play. As we know all too well, getting paid to play in college athletics is a big no-no.

On Tuesday, the Volunteers quarterback chose his words poorly when discussing the team’s most recent loss to Missouri.

“I’m paid to win football games,” Bray told reporters, according to USA TODAY.

Naturally, every reporter in the room perked up and one asked Bray to clarify the statement. He quickly realized he had uttered a forbidden sentence and attempted to elaborate.

"I mean… my education,” he said. "That’s what the SEC likes to call 'getting paid.'"

If you ask Cecil Newton, he would probably tell you that the SEC has an entirely different interpretation of “getting paid” and it has nothing to do with playing under a full scholarship. It’s something Nick Saban and a number of other coaches have been accused of, and it is a very sensitive subject.

We’ll give Bray the benefit of the doubt and assume it was just an expression. And if not, the Vols and their 0-6 SEC record might need to consider paying a little more.

  • He's correct they are paid educational cost every year. Does the media actually have anyone sending their kids to college?

Tennessee Football: Media Misunderstood Amid Craziness

Life on a college beat can be quite tedious under the general pretenses of stability within the athletic department. It’s a difficult job, but when things are going well – or, at least, as planned – it can get repetitive. Same stories day in and day out with a slightly different spin. However, when things go poorly, there aren’t many more stressful gigs on the planet. There’s...

Tyler Bray says he's "paid to win football games," then walks it back.

Leave it to Tennessee star quarterback Tyler Bray to nonchalantly say something that could trigger yet another NCAA investigation of the Vols athletic program quicker than you can say "Lane Kiffin." In a Tuesday press conference Bray, who's lack of emotion on the field (between occasional fits of sulking and anger) sometimes makes him seem a graduate of the Jay Cutler...

Tennessee fires Dooley as coach

Tennessee has fired football coach Derek Dooley after he posted losing seasons in each of his three years. The 44-year-old Dooley posted a 15-21 record that sorely lacked quality wins over conference foes. Dooley was 4-19 in Southeastern Conference games and 0-15 against Top 25 teams. Tennessee is 1-14 in the SEC over the last two years. Tennessee (4-7, 0-7 SEC) must win its season...
