Big 10 sites were crowing about their schools offering multiyear scholarships to this year's recruits, yesterday. Now we find that, at least, two SEC schools have joined a new wave. Auburn coach Gene Chizik told reporters that he offered one-year renewable scholarships but an Auburn athletic department spokesman said all that Auburn sent four-year agreements to new recruits. Multi-year scholarships could still be revoked for ineligibility, gross misconduct, fraudulent misrepresentation or voluntarily leaving a sport. Also, a scholarship could be cancelled for non-athletic reasons, such as a player's class attendance record or not following team rules, Big Ten Associate Commissioner Chad Hawley said. "I don't think it's wrong to say (the rule) is symbolic, but it's not entirely symbolic," Hawley said. "I think there's a peace of mind that could come with receiving a four-year grant.
