P.J. Walker’s debut as Temple’s starting quarterback provided a glimpse at the future but ultimately reiterated the frustration of the present.
Walker, a true freshman, went 12-of-22 for 200 yards with two touchdowns and one interception — albeit a costly one — and a fumble as the Owls fell to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in the American Athletic Conference with a 38-20 loss at Cincinnati.
Two games ago, Temple football coach Matt Rhule declared the Owls found themselves a starting quarterback who was going to lead the team to many victories in the future.
That quarterback was Connor Reilly.
But two games later, Reilly was pulled in favor of true freshman P.J. Walker, who finished last week’s game against Louisville and will make his first collegiate start tonight at Cincinnati.
The Temple Owls and Cincinnati Bearcats will face off on Friday in a match-up of two All-American Conference schools.
While Temple enters the game 0-5, a 3-2 Cincinnati team is looking to rebound following a 26-20 loss to a previously winless South Florida team.
