NFL Prospect a Day: Casey Hayward

It’s been all offense for our first two prospects of the day, but now we can start digging into the depth that this draft offers.

You see teams aren’t built on first round talent, they have to be built with depth and great picks in the draft, and that is what I think Casey Hayward can and will be.

Hayward is a physical, undersized CB that was not highly thought coming into his college career, that’s usually why you end up at Vanderbilt, and has played his way into a solid NFL Prospect.

Casey Hayward, CB
Height 5’11″
Weight 188
40 time 4.45 (predicted)

Hayward is a ballhawk, plain and simple ending the season with five interceptions, 54 tackles, 6.5 tackles for a loss and nine passes broken up.

Hayward has adequate size and may start out as a slot corner, but his high level ball skills will allow him to fit into any NFL defense.

More importantly Hayward is very good against the run, and does a great job in coming up to the line of scrimmage and tackling.

So What are the experts saying:

“According to Steve Muench and Kevin Weidl of ESPN’s Scouts Inc., Hayward has been very good at reading quarterbacks and routes and making plays on balls in front of him. The Scouts Inc. guys like Hayward’s toughness, but question whether he’ll ever be a great one-on-one cover cornerback in the NFL because he lacks “ideal fluidity.

Hayward is going to make a team happy, he has the tools to translate to a solid #2 cornerback in the league, and should not have a problem fitting into any schemes.

He may lack ideal hip turn, and seem to cheat in breaks in order to make up for that, but he has a natural flow to his coverage skills that allows him to make a play on the ball when thrown, and never be out of position.

Some Fits:
New England Patriots
New Orleans Saints
Minnesota Vikings
