Only one more Tuesday morning after this one seperates us from the sea of red joining as one again in beautiful Sanford Stadium. With only 11 more days to kickoff, we will unveil who our #11 player on our countdown to kickoff is. This is a player that can win games or lose games for you. This might be the most important position in college football besides the quarterback position. Alabama lost against LSU last year in their first matchup because they struggled putting up the "3" when chances were there. The University of Georgia has had a long line of successful players at this position and let's hope this player continues the tradition. Marshall Morgan, 6'3 185lb freshmen from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, will be try to feel big shoes being a kicker at the Unversity of Georgia. A few of the different kickers that have come through UGA are Blair Walsh, Brandon Coutu, Billy Bennett, and all the way back to Kevin Butler and Rex Robinson. I know at certain times each one of these players have struggled, but for the most part, they had successful careers and have built tradition at UGA of being a big time school for FG kicking.
Morgan is important for several different reasons but one stands out. Mike Bobo takes a conservative approach on the offensive side of the ball. UGA likes to play FG, field possession, and let our defense do the hard work. This year will be no different except for the fact we will have an 18 year old kid, well maybe 19, kicking the FG's in front of 95,000 fans expecting him to knock every one of them through the uprights. Marshall Morgan is not like most of the other freshmen this year, he is expected to do big things and from all signs, he deals with pressure just fine.
As a freshmen in high school, Morgan was an all-state punter. As a sophomre he was an all-state kicker. As a junior, he attempted 16 FG's, knocking down 15 of them (94% if your counting) and averaged 43.7 yards per punt. Oh and if your wondering, he puts the kickoffs in the endzone about 100% of the time. This kid can kick, kickoff, punt, snap......no not snap, well maybe he can, who knows.....but the kid brings a lot to UGA for this rebuilding special teams unit.
Morgan was named starter by Coach Richt on Thursday, August 9th and the he has gotten so much more comfortable at practice being named the starter. “I feel really comfortable with the team,” Morgan said. “The snapper, the line, the whole operation is going really well. We still have a lot of room to improve these next three weeks, but I think we can do it.” “I knew it wasn’t going to be easy just coming in here to start,” Morgan said. “[Jamie] Lindley is a great kicker, and Adam Erickson and [punter] Collin Barber, they can also kick, too. It’s just one big competition. I’m not taking anything for granted and trying my hardest.
“I know I’ve got to be consistent. It’s SEC football. So I can’t mess up, pretty much.” AJC
That last comment would not be true if we were talking about a SEC Quarterback, Runningback or any other position......but kicker is a position if you are consistent, you can kick forever but if you are inconsistent you will be replaced quickly. Here is a Dawg Fan hoping for a successful and consistent 4-years from Marshall.
