Oklahoma defensive end D.J. Ward had his spleen removed Tuesday and coach Bob Stoops says it will be about a six-week recovery process for the freshman from Moore.
Stoops announced the surgery while meeting with reporters Tuesday. He says Ward had an enlarged spleen and that doctors ''felt the need to remove it.'' He says it ''had nothing to do with contact or anything.''
Ward had not practiced with the Sooners during the preseason. He was expected to contribute to a defensive line that's short on experience entering the season opener Aug. 31 against Louisiana-Monroe.
Stoop says it hasn't yet been decided if Ward would redshirt this season or try to come back.

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said he hasn't decided on a quarterback and seems to content to wait to name one.
The Sooners went through a closed-to-the-publicmedia scrimmage Saturday, but Stoops wouldn't elaborate on who might have the edge as we get closer to the team's opening game Aug. 31 against Louisiana-Monroe.
Stoops went on to say he was not going to make any formal...
NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said defensive end D.J. Ward had his spleen removed Tuesday morning and will be out at least six weeks.
The loss of Ward, who was expected to contribute to a defensive line that is already thin on bodies, comes after losing five defensive linemen a season ago. Meanwhile, Oklahoma already lost defensive end Michael Onuoha earlier this month...
Consistency hasn't been a problem for Oklahoma of late.
The issue has been finding a way to make the jump from the elite of the Big 12 Conference back to national championship contender. Coach Bob Stoops hopes this is the season the Sooners make that jump, a year that appears to be one of transition for the tradition-rich school.
Oklahoma has won 10 games in each of the last...
Less than three weeks before Oklahoma's season opener, coach Bob Stoops seems unconcerned that he hasn't yet named a starting quarterback.
Stoops gave no indication that his decision will come any time soon and he told reporters he hasn't ruled out using both Blake Bell and Trevor Knight when the Sooners host Louisiana-Monroe on Aug. 31, saying ''there's...
The Oklahoma Sooners kick off their 2013 football season in less than three weeks against Louisiana-Monroe. One store in Miami, Oklahoma, is showing its Sooner pride the only way it can – with a giant display made from cases of soda.
Do you think that it can compete with this ECU display from earlier this year?
It’s a daring thing to post a preview of the Oklahoma Sooners on a Texas fan-site, but I’m going to go ahead and take that risk and plunge into the world of Bob Stoops and apparently, Barry Switzer saving dogs from hot cars.
The Sooners enjoyed stable success during the Landry Jones era from 2009-2012, but never quite got over the hump in terms of a national title appearance...
