Oregon St. Beavers vs. Washington Huskies things to love & hate from Saturday

Dawgs upset Beavers 20-17. I don’t understand this Husky team. I really just don’t. They mess with my emotions. But that was a gigantic win. Let’s get to it. Love ‘Em The Huskies are Getting Religious Assemble churchgoers, for the Bishop is in town. Bishop Sankey rushed for 92 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries against one of the best run defenses in the nation. Sankey is for real. By establishing the run early, the Washington Huskies were able to take the pressure off Keith Price. Taking an early lead allowed the Huskies some leisure.  Too often this season, the Dawgs have fallen behind early and Price has been forced to pass frequently, usually taking some big hits along the way. Bishop Sankey and the running game have been a huge part of the Huskies successes this season. Kasen & Friends When the Huskies needed to pass, it was there. Kasen Williams had a big game with five receptions for 61 yards. Williams  has disappeared at times this year in clutch situations. He sure didn’t Saturday, with his two fourth quarter catches setting up a touchdown and the game winning field goal. Jaydon Mickens, Michael Hartvigson, and Kendyl Taylor chipped in six more catches and 87 yards between them. Both Williams and the rest of the receiving core were able to take some pressure off the overworked Austin Seferian-Jenkins. Yardage Stats The Beavers had 427 total yards. The Huskies had 293. OSU rushed for 109 yards to our 99. Oregon State threw for 318 yards, to our 194. They also had higher yards per-pass and per-run averages. A HUGE win for a wounded Dawgs team. (Photo NWSB Instagram) Just goes to show sometimes stats don’t tell the whole story. Hate ‘Em Penalties Ugh. Just Ugh. The Huskies have consistently crushed their opposition in the penalties category, and Saturday was no exception with eight for 84 yards. John Timu’s touchdown that was called back was a heartbreaker, and we were lucky it didn’t cost us more. Stupid penalties will cost us a big game if we don’t shape up. Home/Away Split In the last five games, the Huskies have beaten a top-10 team, lost, lost badly, lost even worse, and than beaten another top-10 team. I dare you to find another team that plays so drastically differently in home and away games. If we could play on the road regularly like we do at home, we would be Rose Bowl contenders. The Late Touchdown I haven’t given a shout-out to the secondary, but Desmond Trufant, Shaq Thompson, and Sean Parker were all lethal on the day, helping contribute to Oregon State quarterback Sean Mannion’s four interceptions. However, the Huskies gave up a late TD pass from Cody Vaz to Connor Hamlet in the fourth quarter that brought Oregon State back in the game. Vaz  came off the bench cold and threw a strike to the double-covered Hamlet. Oregon State is a great team, but we manhandled their offense for most of the game. We got sloppy at the end. Overall, this was a HUGE win for a wounded Dawgs team. They’ve shown they can hang with the best, even if they are frustratingly inconsistent at times.  Looking forward, the schedule gets considerably easier. A bowl game is calling.
