Defensive Coordinator Nick Holt/MyNorthwest.com

I’ve deliberated on this for two whole years, and I’m ready to make a decision.

Fire Nick Holt.

It’s excusable to give up passing yards against Eastern Washington or Hawaii. It’s OK to get pounded on the ground by Nebraska and Stanford. I’m fine with getting out-schemed by Oregon or outrun by USC.

But Oregon State? Two-win Oregon State? Oregon State that LOST AT HOME to a Sacramento State squad that couldn’t handle Southern Utah, Weber State, Northern Arizona or Portland State?

It’s not about talent, folks. It’s not about recruiting. Yes, the linebackers are young and the cornerbacks are terrible. I know this. But this defensive scheme would make a runny nose look like the New England Patriots.

Oregon State ran drags and drags and drags and picks and drags all game without any sort of adjustment by Washington’s defense. They threw the ball deep approximately one time. When you’re guessing against this Oregon State team, there’s a problem.

What really gets me, though, are the coverages. “Bend but don’t break” was cute when we were The Young Washington Huskies, Who Just A Year Ago Were 0-12. But once the condescending Bob Costas appeal is gone and we’re actually expected to win games against bad opponents, I would prefer that our nickel corner line up within 12 yards of the slot receiver on third-and-short, please.

Had it been 2009 when Markus Wheaton made a catch 15 yards downfield with Greg Ducre still 10 yards off of him, I would have shaken my head and said, “Wow, Greg Ducre, you are unbelievably bad.” But when that happened ON THIRD-AND-9 in the second quarter today... That was my breaking point on the Nick Holt defense.

Tell me this, Mr. Holt: when you’re playing hyper-conservative to negate the big play (against Oregon State? Really?) and then slants and sweeps consistently go for 50 yards or more, what exactly have you prevented?

Obviously, personnel is somewhat to blame for today’s performance. Missed tackles and missed assignments are not the fault of the coaching staff.

Wait, what am I saying, of course they are.

Some teams recruit very well on defense and those teams do just fine. Other coaches aren’t quite there yet in terms of recruiting. But some of those coaches own it. They know where they’re at. They make do with two- and three-star recruits. In fact, Holt was looking across the sideline at a coaching staff that’s been quite effectively doing just that for the last eight years.

Dare I say it? Clay Matthews, Rey Maualuga, Terrell Thomas and Lawrence Jackson made Nick Holt?

The offense had a bad day, but quite honestly, 21 points should be enough to beat Oregon State. It’s been enough for seven other opponents this year. We shouldn’t need top-level talent to have a defense that can run with bad offenses.

I’m all about coaching continuity and giving people a fair shot, but my goodness am I ever tired of this guy.
