Penn State has lost junior defensive end Pete Massaro for the upcoming season. Multiple sources have confirmed that Massaro tore his ACL and will miss the entire 2011 campaign. Massaro will require surgery on the torn ligament. Massaro started the final 11 games last season at defensive end and totaled 37 tackles (8 for loss), 3.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery.Penn State’s defensive line was average at best last season. A goal coming into this season was generating a more consistent pass rush on defense. With no clear cut star at defensive end, they need all the depth they can get. Larry Johnson’s current squad is weak and he had hopes of Massaro developing into a solid option for the Nittany Lions at a position that usually has few holes. Penn State will rely on Eric Latimore, Jordan Hill, and Jack Crawford, who is still banged, to deliver in the trenches.
