Florida State and Pittsburgh may be facing off on the football field on Monday, September 2nd, but the two schools will also be teaming up for a good cause — raising awareness for Fanconi anemia. Fanconi anemia is a rare blood disorder that affects the body’s ability to produce numerous types of blood cells, which drastically affects bone marrow. It is a disorder that affects Jimbo Fisher’s 8-year-son, Ethan, and what better time is there to raise awareness than a prime-time week 1 college football matchup? That was the thought process of Pitt coach Paul Chryst, per the Orlando Sentinel: According to Jimbo Fisher, the idea of wearing the helmet decals was Pitt coach Paul Chryst’s idea. “He said, ‘We wear patches for all these different cures and things, and he said, ‘We’ve got Ethan with this and Fanconi anemia. Why don’t we wear something for them? We have children up in our area that have it,’” Fisher said, relaying comments Chryst made to him at last month’s ACC Kickoff in Greensboro, N.C. It was a fantastic suggestion by Chryst — Fanconi anemia has been garnering some attention lately after the absolutely tragic death of a 2-year old boy. Both teams agreed that raising more awareness was a great idea, and they will wear special decals on their helmets next Monday: It’s great to see two teams separate football competition and real life — this is a pretty cool story.
