According to WUSA 9 in Washington, D.C., the University of Maryland football team is exploring the option of re-sodding the natural grass field at Byrd Stadium with black or pewter turf. The Terps were scheduled to upgrade their natural grass field to artificial turf for the upcoming season but news of the field potentially being all black was reported this past weekend. This would be the second bold statement that the Terps football team would make in successive seasons, after unveiling some controversial uniforms last year. The uniforms were received with mixed emotions by fans and commentators but they did bring some attention to a team that has been far from newsworthy for the past 10 years.

It’s an interesting concept with a great design but the logistics of having a black field would be problematic. The biggest concern would be during night games when the black of the field could make it harder for referees to call fumbles, catch/non-catches and other plays that involve the football hitting the ground. One of the other big issues would be the heat of the field. It’s tough to know how big of a temperature difference the field might bring to day games when the sun is beating down on players. If they can find solutions to these two big issues, I would be a huge proponent of the change.

With their all blue field and an increase in player talent, Boise State has been able to gain some additional exposure for their program. Boise State’s all blue field is seen as a bit of an eyesore, whereas the proposed Maryland field brings a hip uniqueness to it. We’ll see if Athletic Director Kevin Anderson is able to pull the trigger on creating the all black field for Maryland.
