San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl
(9) Boise State vs. (11) TCU
Dec. 23rd, 8 pm, San Diego
About The Bowl: This bowl has to easily be the least-hyped bowl of the best non-BCS matchup. The 13th ranked offense of Boise State against the No. 2 ranked defense of TCU is easily the biggest matchup for this game. Boise State averages 39.4 points a game, while TCU holds its opponents to a mere 10.9, good for 2nd in Division 1. The key battle within the battle will be RBs Ian Johnson and Jeremy Avery, which lead a rushing attack that puts up 162.7 yards a game, against a rush defense that is tops with only 48.7 yards against a game. DE Jerry Hughes leads that attack, and gets help from eight other performers with at least four tackles for loss on the season. QB Kellen Moore will need to see where Hughes is on every play, and use some different formations (what Boise State is known for) to keep TCU honest. A good blitz package, taking away the underneath and preventing screens, will assist TCU in battle against the 14th ranked passing offense (301.8 per game). For TCUs offense, their key to victory is their clock control run game, which is 13th in the nation with 215.7 yards per game, and against undersized linebackers and lineman, BSU will force their top Safety's to come up, opening the door for the effective passing game in Andy Dalton and continued sustained long drives. For a one on one matchup, look at CB Kyle Wilson versus top TCU WR Jimmy Young, who is 74 yards away from a 1,000 yard season.
