PLAYERS: Jon Halapio
TEAMS: Florida Gators
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- No. 10 Florida will be without two offensive starters in the team's season opener against Toledo. Coach Will Muschamp ruled out running back Matt Jones and right guard Jon Halapio on Friday, eight days before the opener. Jones has missed all of fall practice following a viral infection. Muschamp says the sophomore, who had been expected to be a starter, will have more blood work done Monday to determine if his immune system is healthy enough for him to start practicing. Muschamp says there's no timetable for Jones' return. Halapio, a senior who has started 27 consecutive games at right guard, has been limited in camp with a partially torn pectoral muscle. Muschamp projects Halapio will return for the team's third game of the season, against Tennessee.

Maye standing out in camp

Florida head coach Will Muschamp didn’t need to wait until game week to end the battle at safety. Redshirt freshman Marcus Maye did enough in the first few weeks of camp to squash any doubts and earn the safety spot opposite of Cody Riggs. It might not have even taken that long. Now healthy after a meniscus injury last year, Maye has turned himself into the talk of fall camp.

When third down rolled around, the Gators didn’t need to substitute other players onto the field. Florida defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin expects more subs this year.

From 1938 to 1987, both teams annually met for a premier rivalry that...
