Fox Sports Wisconsin:
MADISON, Wis. - One day after Wisconsin running back Montee Ball announced his decision to stay for his senior season, one of his lead blockers reportedly is headed for the NFL.
Badgers center Peter Konz will not return next season, opting instead to put his name into the NFL draft, according to the Wisconsin State Journal, which cited a UW source.
Konz, a 6-foot-5, 315-pound redshirt junior from Neenah, Wis., started 11 games this season at center for the Badgers. He suffered a dislocated left ankle against Minnesota on Nov. 12 and missed the next three games but returned in time to play in the Rose Bowl against Oregon.
Konz was selected as a first-team All-American by the American Football Coaches Association and Pro Football Weekly. He earned first-team All-Big Ten honors from the media and honorable mention status from conference coaches. In his career, he played in 31 games with 30 starts.
NFLDraftScout.com projects Konz to go in the first round, at No. 24 overall. Several other mock drafts list Konz as a first-round NFL pick.
Ball, a Heisman Trophy finalist, announced his return for his senior year on Thursday after receiving feedback from the NFL draft board advisory that he would be a third-round selection.
The deadline for underclassmen to declare for the NFL draft is Jan. 15.
