Sad news for Notre Dame fans today — outside linebacker Danny Spond is calling it quits from football. Shortly after Spond was seen on the sidelines during practice walking with a cane, head coach Brian Kelly announced the news in his post-practice press conference:
Kelly would not go into the specifics of Spond’s departure, but it seems pretty easy to read between the lines — Danny has been a regular on the team’s injury report.
This is certainly very sad news for Spond and the Notre Dame faithful — nobody ever wants to see a career shortened by injuries. Spond was expected to be a big contributor to the 2013 team — he had 41 tackles and one interception last season.
There is some good news, as Spond will remain with the team to help out:
Best of luck to Danny Spond in all of his pursuits.

Notre Dame fans loved seeing Everett Golson emerge last season. With a trip to the national title game who wouldn't, right? That joy was equaled in the disappointment felt when news spread that he had been suspended for the coming season.
Worry not! The team still has senior Tommy Rees; the man that bailed the team and Golson out on occasion last season...
While many Irish fans are still a bit skeptical on senior quarterback Tommy Rees running the offense this year, it’s apparent that his wide receivers are behind him 100%. Senior wideout T.J. Jones tweeted out a hilarious photo of himself and three of his teammates catching passes behind a “Rees’ Pieces” logo. Jones seems to be the first to tweet the photo, but we can’t...

NBC does an excellent job detailing pretty much everything that the Notre Dame football program does. The network has done an especially good job creating mini-documentaries throughout the course of football season under the series name Strong And True — the most recent one aired before the Blue/Gold Game this spring.
Today, the school released a trailer of the next Strong and...
Has this fall camp for Notre Dame been as quiet as we have had in recent memory? If not, it sure seems like it. That, of course, isn't really a bad thing as we could be flooded with news about injuries and quarterback battles and, well... nonsense.
I haven't heard much "nonsense." Of course, the media has been pretty well shut out from viewing practices aside...
Sports-themed cakes are the best. We’ve shown you quite a number of them here on the site, and we figured you’re due for another.
Notre Dame fan Rob Noone wanted nothing more on his wedding day than an Irish cake for him and his wife — he was not left disappointed. Here’s the “Marry Like A Champion Today” cake the couple displayed:
We’re down to just one final season of college football in the BCS era, as fans will finally get to see a 4-team playoff system beginning in 2014. As such, we figured we’d take a look at the postseason history since 1998 and compile some data from every bowl game played in that time frame. Our goal was to see which teams have consistently performed the best using...
It looks like Notre Dame has taken the appropriate (read: hilarious) safety measures to make sure no more backs run into the backside of a rushing sled.
