COLUMBUS, Ohio Denard Robinson was a jack of all trades in the first quarter Saturday against Ohio State. Robinson lined up at quarterback in the shotgun formation on Michigans first play from scrimmage, and eluded penetration to gallop for 38 yards around right end. Nicknamed Shoelaces for regularly losing his cleats, which he does not tie, Robinson was true to form on that run. He lost a shoe upon reaching the sideline and proceeded without it until being forced out of bounds. Devin Gardner, who started the last three games and helped the Wolverines produce 16 touchdowns in those contests, came on for the next snap and threw a seven-yard pass to receiver Jeremy Gallon. Robinson, with 10,547 yards in career total offense entering the game, has not played quarterback since suffering nerve damage in his right elbow late in the first half of the Nebraska game. He generally stayed in the offense as a back, and sometimes Michigan coach Brady Hoke elected to go with three backs split around quarterback Gardner. Robinsons second run was four yards and produced a first down, and he later returned to quarterback to hand off to Vincent Smith. Robinson did not attempt to throw a pass or even get his arm loose in pre-game warm-ups. He returned to the lineup as a back and receiver last week against Iowa, but did not play quarterback. The first drive ended with Gardner losing a fumble on a hit by tackle Adolphus Washington that was recovered by middle linebacker Zach Boren. However, Gardner hit Roy Roundtree down the right sideline for a 75-yard touchdown to tie the score at 7-7 on Michigans second possession. The Buckeyes scored on a three-yard run by Carlos Hyde on the games opening drive. Ohio State defensive end John Simon, who leads his team with nine sacks and has 44 tackles, did not dress with a right knee injury.
