Thanks to their enormous success, Boise State was everyone's rival when they played in the WAC. The Broncos have yet to officially lace 'em up in the Mountain West and they're already taking shots from others around the conference.

This time it's San Diego State head coach Rocky Long who sounded off about the Broncos and their famous blue turf.

Via Brian Murphy at The Idaho Statesman:

"I think they ought to get rid of that blue turf. I think it's unfair," said Long, the former New Mexico coach who is in his first season as the Aztecs' head coach.
When asked to expand, Long said, "it takes the visiting team a quarter or two to get used to that different field."

Unfortunately for Long, things seem to be going in the opposite direction. Since Boise came to prominence, both Eastern Washington and New Braunfels (TX) Canyon High School have gone red while there were rumors that UT-San Antonio could end up with an orange field. In fact, when you consider some of the new, avant-garde playing surfaces out there (I'm looking at you, Oregon basketball), this trend seems to be all the rage amongst athletic departments seeking more revenue and/or attention.

Maybe Long should convince the folks at SDSU to roll out the nation's first all-black field. That'll show 'em.

  • Ah, the Bronco's secret to success is finally revealed. I agree that this gives Boise St. an unfair advantage as it hides their Defensive Secondary in passing situations.
  • It does help there secondary. Has anyone ever noticed how any Boise DB that was touted in a draft never pan out in the NFL? There was Kyle Wilson last year, but he sucked as a rookie, hard. It was cuz he didn't have the blue turf to save his ass.
  • Their**
  • so by that logic, Oregon and any other Green uniformed teams have an even greater advantage because their uniforms are the same as the grass and turf at home and away!

Gotta remember, standing ON the turf, you dont notice it like you do on TV.
  • If that is true, then so is the contrary. Hmmm, seems BSU manages to adjust to all those green fields fairly quickly. So it's not really the field,...but the team. What a concept. BSU proved that point when they wore ALL orange against Fresno State. Quit crying about the color of the turf. It's our 11 against yours,...and you will lose.
  • The flaw with your argument is that the green football field is the universal field color since that is the color of grass and to match grass why turf is green as well. I can guarantee you that every single Boise player played on green grass/turf in high school. Therefore they are already used to playing on green grass/turf, der. Not everyone plays and practices on a blue field like Boise does. You obviously never played organized football. Spend all week playing on your green grass/turf and then jump onto your ugly blue turf for a game and see how easy it is. It's not. The color change will throw you for a loop and the blue can be blinding, regardless of what color jersey Boise wears. So yes, the blue turf does give Boise an unfair advantage when playing at home. Oh, and when does Boise not have a cupcake schedule? They only play maybe one good team, maybe, early in the season and then that's it.
  • Don`t be jealous because BSU is a good team and the Blue Turf is not an advantage so quit being a sore looser and by the way who is your team ?
  • You could argue this point it the undefeated numbers were just at home. come on really, of all the lame excuses
  • I don't know what it is like to play on a blue field, though I guess it would create an unfair situation. I do know it bothers my eyes to watch home Boise games on TV - so I don't. I wish there was a set standard.
  • It's true. For years BSU refused to leave Boise and their infamous blue aka "Smurf Turf". I'm a native Idahoan born and raised, and I could care less about BSU. Their players get away with rape, murder and other crap because everyone here kisses their asses. Boise State plays no name Triple A schools. So of course in a division with no talent, they'd be number one. That's pretty much like being the smartest kid with down syndrome. Well all I can say to the BSU fans out there, is that you will NEVER win a National BCS title. And NO, I'm not a Vandals fan. I cheer on real teams that play real college ball like Auburn, Virginia Tech, Florida, etc. 'Nuff said!
  • Don't even try to lump BSU in with those 'other' programs. The point here is that BSU's football program takes unknowns and turns them into NFL draft picks. BSU will play ANY TEAM, any time, any where. It's those 'other' schools that won't sign up. Some have, and paid the price; Oklahoma (one of those 'other' programs), Oregon (twice), VTech (2010 ACC champs), TCU (2010 Rose Bowl champs), and Georgia will find out this Fall. Put your 11 against mine, and I will beat you.
  • Ha BSU! How many probowlers do they have in the NFL? 2 you say. That sound s like a massive nfl talent producing school. They will play anyone anywhere you say, true but only for a 7 figure payout, ask some SEC schools about that. They are weak their schedule is weak and your argument that the field is an unfair advantage akin to generated crowd noise is also weak.
