The 2011 Texas Longhorns football team runs the ball well, you could even say with dominance. The efforts of true freshmen Joe Bergeron and Malcolm Brown, combined with the explosive speed of D.J. Monroe and the veteran smarts and elusivness of Fozzy Whittaker have made the running back unit for Texas one to be reckoned with.
Regardless, Mack Brown mentioned in his morning press conference today that the Longhorns must be more balanced in coming weeks against Missouri, Kansas State, Texas A&M and Baylor.
On paper, this makes sense. It’s typically not advisable to focus on one element of the offensive game exclusively while abandoning the other.
Should Texas force a more balanced offense in coming weeks?
If so, why?
–
With the departures of several wide receivers from Texas during the course of the off-season and the 2011 season, there have been some grumblings around the Forty Acres that the wideouts are feeling unappreciated and like they don’t “fit” in the current Texas offensive scheme.
Apparently, this is enough of a concern to Mack Brown and the Texas coaching staff that they would be willing to throw the ball more regardless over the remainder of the season. Obviously, David Ash and the Texas receivers are only going to gel through live-action repetition, but one can only hope that these reptitions are organic and not in an ill-fated effort to keep everyone happy.
Successful game-planning is all about using the tools at your disposal in the best way possible to achieve the desired outcome. In this case, the Texas running backs have more than proven the ability to churn yardage, grind down the clock, and allow Texas to walk away with games in the fourth quarter due to conditioning alone.
Should this be messed with just to achieve balance?
That’s for Mack Brown to know and the rest of us to find out.
After all, he is the highest-paid state employee in Texas for a reason.
