Multiple sources have confirmed that Arizona State football coach Dennis Erickson will be fired this week, and a news conference could be scheduled as soon as Monday. Erickson, 64, is under contract for one more season. If he's fired, he'll receive half of his 1.5 million annual salary for the remainder of the term, but the two sides could be working out a different deal with unknown concessions. Sources said Erickson would not coach in any bowl game in which ASU would take part. Houston coach Kevin Sumlin is the top candidate to replace Erickson, two sources said. The 47-year-old Sumlin, who runs a pass-heavy offense from his time as offensive coordinator at Oklahoma, has a 35-16 record in four years at Houston and has the Cougars 12-0 this year and in line for a BCS bowl berth. Erickson is 31-30 in five seasons in Tempe. The Sun Devils went 10-3 in his first season and advanced to the Holiday Bowl, where they lost to Texas. ASU did not make a bowl game the following three seasons, going 21-27 in that stretch. The Sun Devils opened the 2011 season 6-2, including wins over Missouri and Southern California, but lost their final four games two to teams that currently sport losing records (Washington State and Arizona) to seal Ericksons fate. The slide began with a 29-28 loss at UCLA on Nov. 5 in which kicker Alex Garoutte missed all three of his field-goals attempts, including a potential game-winner as time expired. If the Sun Devils had won that game, they would have clinched the Pac-12 South title and advanced to the conferences inaugural title game.
