As Texas A&M packs up their stuff and gets ready to move from the Big 12 to the SEC, there’s one thing they won’t be bringing- head coach Mike Sherman. As the Aggies move on up (at least conference wise) like Sherman Helmsley and uh, um whoever played Weezey on The Jeffersons, they’ll do so with a new man leading their college football program.

The Aggies finished the regular season a very disappointing 6-6; I had them in my preseason top 15 . I had QB Ryan Tannehill in my NFL Mock Draft; now I’d barely put him in an Arena League Mock Draft. He does have a scorching hot fiance though.

Athletic Director Bill Byrne announced the firing in a statement yesterday.

Sherman went 25-25 in four seasons at A&M. He had three years remaining on his contract and the buyout will be a very hefty $5.8 million. He initially hired at the end of the 2007 season three days after Dennis Franchione resigned.

From the AP:

His best and only winning season came last year when the Aggies won their last six regular-season games and lost in the Cotton Bowl to finish 9-4.

“I appreciate Coach Sherman’s selfless service to Texas A&M as our head football coach and his tireless efforts in building leaders of character,” Byrne said in the statement. “He is truly one of the great offensive minds in football, both collegiate and professional, and I know that he has much to offer the game of football in the future.”

Byrne said he will talk with the assistant coaches to decide who will serve as the interim coach for Texas A&M’s bowl game. He also hopes to meet with the team and remaining staff Friday.

Going .500 just doesn’t cut it at a proud program like A&M in a football crazy state like Texas. So yet another primo job is open this year- it’s starting to become a really crowded field.
