Adrian Colbert 230x300 Texas football picks up two 2012 defensive commits

As the regular season came to an end for the Texas Longhorns, their 2012 football commitments have picked up.

Two new 2012 Longhorns have made their formal commitments to the team today, DBs Kevin Vacarro and Adrian Colbert.

Vaccaro– the younger brother of Texas senior DB Kenny Vaccaro– is a 5’9″, 175 pound cornerback from Brownwood, Texas, is considered a three-star recruit by Rivals, but is not ranked either among the state’s best defensive backs or nationally. Given this, Vacarro’s commitment to Texas is obviously a nod to the contributions made by his brother to the Texas program over the past few seasons. Mack Brown and the Texas coaching staff are likely also banking on his potential as a darkhorse to play a role in a Texas defensive secondary which is improving rapidly.

With the success he has had in shaping Texas defensive backs into NFL talents, however, Duane Akina should never be second-guessed, so I’m assuming there is more to Vacarro than meets the eye.

On the other hand, Mineral Wells’ Adrian Colbert is a well-known commodity in Texas high school football. Rated by Rivals as the 23rd best defensive back in Texas– and its 41st-best player overall- Colbert has Division I size already, standing 6’1″ and weighing 193 pounds.

A dual-threat this season for Minerall Wells, Colbert tallied 16 touchdowns and 1,048 yards of total offense and recorded 90 tackles defensively– 69 of which were unassisted.

The addition of both Vacarro and Colbert adds some nice depth to a Texas defensive secondary that already has a bright future ahead with outstanding performances from Quandre Diggs and Carrington Byndom this season.

Duane Akina and Manny Diaz will have all the options they need next season to ensure there is no drop-off in Texas’ high standards and reputation as DBU.
