A few weeks ago, the Texas Longhorns found out that sophomore wideout Marquis Goodwin would not be a part of the football team in 2011 due to his decision to compete in the World Track and Field Championships in Daegu, South Korea.
This announcement was the first sign that Texas’ receiving corps would be heavily dependent on newcomers. This morning’s announcement that senior WR Malcolm Williams was leaving the team for personal reasons is a big blow to a Texas offense implementing a new system and full of insecurities.
While Williams’ production had dropped off substantially over the course of the past few seasons, he was set to be a large part of the Texas passing attack in 2011.
Now, Bryan Harsin, Major Applewhite, and Mack Brown will be forced to turn their attention to several newcomers who have not yet proven themselves at the Division I level. Mike Davis has emerged from the pack to be the Longhorns’ obvious No.1 target, but the remaining looks will be shared between sophomore Darius White and freshmen Jaxon Shipley, Miles Onyegbule and junior DeSean Hales.
Redshirt freshmen Chris Jones and John Harris could see some looks as well, but do not figure to be at the top of the Texas depth chart.
Texas will have enough to deal with entering the 2011-2012 season after a struggle in 2010, finishing 5-7 and missing a bowl game for the first time in several seasons. The loss of Malcolm Williams is another early roadblock in 2011 which will change the face of one of Texas’ most important units.
