In the end the parting between Jeff Casteel and West Virginia was amicable and that’s really all that’s important.
The Mountaineers had known for some time that Casteel wanted out and Dana Holgorsen started extending feelers to possible replacements in October, while at the same time, trying to convince Casteel to stay.
Why Casteel chose to leave has been discussed extensively and no one but Jeff will ever know for sure but I have to believe his reason for leaving was that he wanted to be a head coach--and most of all Casteel wanted to be the head coach at West Virginia.
Casteel’s departure from WVU was inevitable the moment he understood he would never have the chance to run the Mountaineer program he loves. So he decided to move on and hopefully improve his chances of being the head coach somewhere else.
And who can blame him? The track record for defensive coordinators with long tenures at one school becoming a head coach isn’t very encouraging and if you don’t believ...

DeForest Leaving OSU For West Virginia
After 11 seasons of directing the Oklahoma State special teams and also assisting with the defense, award-winning special teams coordinator and associate head coach Joe DeForest is leaving Oklahoma State. Contacted by phone on Wednesday afternoon, DeForest said he is going to West Virginia to join Dana Holgorsen's staff with a title yet to be determined.

Oklahoma State associate head coach Joe DeForest has resigned, and will join Dana Holgorsen and his new defensive staff at WVU. DeForest has played a huge part in the rise of the OSU program where he was special teams coordinator and safeties coach under Mike Gundy.
