The View of ACC Football: Week 5

Ranking the ACC after week 5...

  • 1
    Virginia Tech 4-1 (2-0)

Proving now that it's the legit ACC power we thought it was before the East Carolina debacle, the Hokies looked solid on the road against Nebraska. "De-redshirting" Tyrod Taylor was the best coaching move made thus far in the ACC.

    Maryland 3-1 (1-0)

Yikes...the ACC's second best lost to Middle Tennessee State? Like the classic Metallica song, it's sad but true. However, the Terps have turned it around, knocking off 2 top 25 opponents in the meantime. Da'rel Scott looks to be one of the better (if not the best) running back in the league.

    North Carolina 3-1 (1-1)

Butch Davis is a heck of a coach, and he is already proving it in his second year with the Heels. After dismantling Rutgers a few weeks ago, UNC followed a tough loss to VT by pulling a comeback win down in Miami. Upcoming games against UConn and Notre Dame will test this team big time, let alone the fact that T.J. Yates will be out for at least 6 weeks.

    Wake Forest 3-1 (1-0)

They certainly lost some ACC street cred (as cool as that would be to have) with a loss to Navy, but don't forget Jim Grobe's squad held Florida State to just 3 points in Tallahassee, and beat Ole Miss at home earlier (and we all know about Ole Miss).

    Georgia Tech 3-1 (1-1)

Virtually tied with Wake in my opinion, GT looks great despite the preseason skepticism of Paul Johnson's offense being implemented. Things are working well so far, and a slimt 3 point loss to Va Tech is all the Jackets have to be upset about.

    Clemson 3-2 (1-1)

(Sigh) This again? A preseason #9 now sits muddling in the middle of it's own admittedly weak conference. Losing to Maryland was a sham that could only be concocted by the Tiger coaching staff. Bowden better win at Wake in a few weeks, or he can kiss visions of Tampa goodbye.

    Duke 3-1 (1-0)

C'mon! Show the non-basketball Devils some love! They just snapped a ridiculously long 25 game ACC losing streak by smashing Virginia 31-3. Seems like Cutcliffe's SEC magic is working with the Dukies as well. Plus, his name is much easier to spell than Kryz..Ksyzh...Kyrsh... Coach K.

    Florida State 3-1 (0-1)

2 wins over DI-AA schools don't impress, but a big win over Colorado does. Antone Smith is a beast at running back, but the game of "quarterback roulette" may come back to haunt Papa Bowden.

  • 9
    Boston College 3-1 (0-1)

If defense wins championships, then BC very well may be in Tampa this year looking for the ACC title hardware. The Eagles have only given up 26 points all year. Unfortunately, 19 of them were to GT, their only loss.

  • 10
    Miami 2-2 (0-1)

Psst...come here. I've got a secret. Miami plays Florida State this coming Saturday. Wow. Remember when that game meant something? Now it's not even on the radar. Give it about 2 more years and it will be.

  • 11
    NC State 2-3 (0-1)

Toss-up question: What's more boring to watch; a Keanu Reeves movie, or NC State's offense? If you answered the latter, you'd be correct! (Though the former would've certainly been an acceptable answer.) The Pack is just dreadful, scoring 16 points a game. There's a good chance they might not win an ACC game this year.

  • 12
    Virginia 1-3 (0-1)

The last thing you could ever want on a college coaching resume: "Lost to Duke by 28 points." Hint to Al Groh: don't use that when looking for a new gig this offseason.
