Notre Dame Tight end Tyler Eifert decided to skip his senior season to enter the 2013 NFL draft and will be the first tight end off the board. Eifert was one of the Golden Domers’ most effective offensive players last season with 50 catches, 685 yards and four touchdowns. That success helped the Fighting Irish junior win the Mackey Award given to the nation’s top tight end. Strengths At 6’6” Tyler Eifert has great length and is a versatile receiving threat. He lined up all over the field for Notre Dame from out wide to in the backfield. Scouts rave about how good he is in a crowd and will give any quarterback a big target. Strong hands and solid route running give Eifert a chance to become a quarterback’s best friend. Weaknesses Tyler Eifert’s glaring weakness is his ability as a blocker. He is lean and athletic, but will not blow anyone off the line in the running game. The Indiana native doesn’t have the strength to consistently contend with defensive ends or physical outside linebackers. He is going to going to have to get bigger if he is ever going to become a complete tight end. Fantasy Impact In the right system the 251 pound Tight end can be an effective fantasy player in his rookie year. Most of the league is going to throw the ball, but the few teams who rely on the run would be the only type of team that would hold down the Fighting Irish alumni. His size immediately makes him a threat in the red zone and we all know how much those two yard touchdown catches can add up. Obviously the better the quarterback the better Eifert’s stats should be, but even if he gets with a young quarterback I could see him becoming a favorite target of a young signal caller who is still trying to establish himself. Prediction Some experts say Tyler Eifert could go in the middle of the first round -I don’t see it. He will be the first tight end off the board, but I think he’s a late first round or early second round guy. Eifert is the kind of fantasy football prospect who could really help a young quarterback in Jacksonville or Cleveland at the top of the second round. Or he will be the starter a year or two down the road in Green Bay or Atlanta with a pick at the end of the first round.
