A billboard featuring USC quarterback Matt Barkley has mysteriously disappeared from a street just a few blocks from UCLA’s campus. No, it wasn’t stolen, but it was taken down and no one seems to be taking responsibility for it.

The billboard was up at the intersection of Westwood Boulevard and Lindbrook Drive in Westwood Village, and featured a picture of Barkley with the Trojans’ theme for 2012: “We Play To Finish” emblazoned on it. The URL to purchase tickets was also written on the bottom.

Sometime late Monday night or early Tuesday, the billboard was stripped or painted over and is now just a black background. USC claims it had nothing to do with it.

USC spokesman Tim Tessalone had the following to say about the billboard coming down:

“USC was not involved in the decision to take any billboard down. We do not agree with the decision, nor were we involved in the decision to take it down.”

UCLA spokesperson Nick Ammazzalorso also claimed the school at nothing to do with the banner disappearing, but Bruins fans were very upset about the fact that it was there in the first place.

The billboard is owned by Regency Outdoor Advertising, and they aren’t giving up the goods either. Representatives for the company have refused to reveal what happened to the sign.

When informed that the billboard in Westwood had come down Barkley took the news in stride, shrugging his shoulders and saying, “I know they’re up all over Southern California. My job is on the field, so whatever happens with that happens.”

None of USC’s other 29 billboards have been taken down. Meanwhile, the team’s media plan is expected to go nationwide this weekend, including an advertisement in New York City’s Times Square, which is set to go up on Saturday.

UPDATE: The owners of Regency Outdoor Advertising now claim they made the decision to move the billboard to another location.
