USC offensive tackle Matt Kalil was selected as the fourth pick in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft today (April 26) by the Minnesota Vikings. Kalil, a 2011 All-American first teamer who won the Pac-12's Morris Trophy, declared for the NFL Draft following his junior season. He becomes USC's 76th first round NFL draft pick, the most of any school. The Trojans now have had 474 NFL draftees, more than any school. Kalil also is the 22nd Trojan offensive lineman selected in the NFL first round since 1968, averaging to one every other year. As the fourth pick, he is USCs highest selection since Reggie Bush went second in 2006 and the highest offensive lineman since Tony Boselli was second in 1995. Kalil joins tackles Ron Yary (first in 1967) and Steve Riley (25th in 1974) as Trojan offensive linemen selected in the first round by the Vikings (both enjoyed careers that spanned more than 10 years in Minnesota). The last time the Vikings selected a Trojan in the first round was Kenechi Udeze in 2004 and the last Trojan drafted in any round by the Vikings was Everson Griffen in 2010, both defensive ends. Kalil is the third member of his family chosen in the NFL Draft. His brother, Ryan (a former Trojan All-American), was a second round selection in 2007 by the Carolina Panthers, where he is an All-Pro center. His father, Frank, was a 1982 draftee by the Buffalo Bills out of Arizona, but he played in the USFL. The NFL Draft continues Friday and Saturday (April 27-28) with rounds 2 through 7.
