Nick Lamaison threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Donavon Kemp on UTEP's first play of overtime as the Miners escaped Stony Brook's upset bid in a 31-24 season-opening victory on Saturday night. UTEP trailed the FCS Seawolves 24-10 in the third quarter. A pair of Lamaison touchdown passes to Eric Tomlinson, for 3 yards in the third quarter and 21 yards with 4:04 remaining in regulation, tied the game. Lamaison was 24 of 38 for 365 yards with three TDs and two interceptions. Kemp had four receptions for 144 yards, and Mike Edwards caught seven passes for 85 yards. Stony Brook quarterback Michael Coulter threw for 168 yards. He was intercepted by TraVaun Nixon on the Seawolves' first play of OT to end the game. Miguel Maysonet rushed for 103 yards on 18 carries for Stony Brook, and Brock Jackolski added 96 yards and a touchdown on 13 rushes.
