All Chris Borland wanted out of high school was a chance. Coming out of Archbishop Alter high school in Kettering, Ohio, was an undersized linebacker at 5-11 and 217 lbs. Of the 119 Division I-A teams in the NCAA, only one team offered him a scholarship, the Wisconsin Badgers. Barry Alvarez and Bret Bielema (now head coach at Arkansas) gave Chris Borland that chance. At Archbishop Alter high school he played both running back and linebacker for the school’s football team. During his junior and senior years on varsity, Borland racked up 805 yards on 88 carries and finished with a total of 12 touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball he accumulated a total of 72 tackles playing varsity. (Rick Wood/Milwaukee Journal Sentinel/MCT) Chris was an all-around great athlete, but he had his mind set on becoming an all-around great linebacker at the collegiate level playing for the Wisconsin Badgers. In his 2009 freshman year, Borland saw the field in 13 games and started in 6 of them at the linebacker position. He led the team that year in forced fumbles with 5 and finished the year with a total of 54 tackles. Some people may have forgotten as well that the primarily positioned linebacker also returned 6 kickoffs and made 3 extra points in a game against Hawaii for the Badgers. Now in his senior year, Chris Borland stands at 5-11, 246 lbs and is considered the best inside linebacker in the country. He is the unsung leader on the Wisconsin football team and does so leading by example. During his career at Wisconsin he has racked up 13 forced fumbles and is 1 shy of tying the all-time record. Borland led the Badgers with a career high 16 tackles in the 31-24 loss to the No.4 Ohio State Buckeyes. The frustrating homecoming has only poured more fuel on to this tackling machine’s fire and you can expect him to unleash that inferno this Saturday against the No.16 Northwestern Wildcats.
