The No.4 ranked Texas Longhorns are set to host the Wyoming Cowboys in their 2010 home opener. The Longhorns got off to a slow start last week against Rice, but was able to come away with a 34-17 win. Cowboys also got off to a good start, as they were able to beat Southern Utah 28-20. Texas is 3-0 lifetime against the Cowboys, including a 41-10 win last season. Looking at the college football odds for this game, the Longhorns come in heavy favorites, as Texas is favored by 29-points over Wyoming, with the over/under currently sitting at 49 points.

The Longhorns actually trailed Rice 0-3 after the first quarter, but exploded for 24 straight points in the second period of play, and wound up taking a 24-10 halftime lead. The Longhorns defense stepped it up in the second half, as Rice didn’t score till the final seconds of the game against the backups.
Cody Johnson went into the game against Rice as the Longhorn’s starting running back, but after a strong showing from sophomore Tre’ Newton, who ran for 61 yards and three touchdowns, Newton will now start for the Longhorns. Johnson finished with 59 yards on 15 carries.

Everyone wanted to see what the offense would look like without Colt McCoy at quarterback, and there was no question that the Longhorns had a different look to them, as they ran the ball 46 times against Rice. Sophomore quarterback Garrett Gilbert played well in his first start for Texas, throwing for 172 yards on 14 of 23 passing. Don’t expect Gilbert to come anywhere close to the numbers that McCoy put up if the Longhorns continue to run the ball as much as they did in the opener.
Wyoming got a strong performance out of their starting quarterback in their win over Southern Utah, as Austyn Carta-Samuels completed 26 of his 32 attempts for three touchdowns. The running game wasn’t so good, as the Cowboys managed just 36 yards rushing last week.

The Cowboys suffered a tragic loss earlier this week, as freshman linebacker Ruben Narcisse was killed in a car accident on Monday. The team is without question effected by the loss, but don’t be surprised if they come out and play a little better than what they are normally capable of, as they will want nothing more than to pull off the dramatic upset against the Longhorns for their fallen teammate.
Looking at the Odds: The Longhorns have been very good in their home opener over the last decade, as they are 10-0 during that span and have won by an average of 42 points. The Longhorns are a young football team, and the sluggish opener against Rice was a bit expected. I think they come out ready to go against Wyoming, as I am calling for the Longhorns to cover the 29-point spread this Saturday. My final score prediction is Texas 48, Wyoming 13.
