LARRY SMITH RUMORS & GOSSIP

Vanderbilt 30, Mississippi 7

Larry Smith ran for a touchdown, and Trey Wilson returned one of his two interceptions for a 52-yard TD as Vanderbilt scored 21 straight in the second quarter and beat Mississippi 30-7 Saturday in making James Franklin the first new Commodores coach to start 3-0 since World War II. The win marks Vanderbilt's first 3-0 start since 2008 when the Commodores won their first bowl...

Vanderbilt 45, Elon 14

Larry Smith threw for two touchdowns and ran for another score, and Vanderbilt beat Elon 45-14 Saturday night in coach James Franklin's debut with the Commodores. Franklin showed his willingness to gamble with the team considered the worst in the Southeastern Conference, going for it on fourth down three times to keep drives alive scoring 17 points. Smith converted the second...

STOP: There is no Quarterback Controversy; Larry Smith should be Vanderbilt's Starting QB

I don't care that Jared Funk led the Commodores down the field for their only touchdown in the second half. He is not as good as Larry Smith. I know Vanderbilt fans have been frustrated with Smith's play at times, but he is not the reason this team isn't winning games. From what I saw, he's the guy playing the hardest and trying to make the most happen on the field...

Putting the Pieces Together

Much can be said about Larry Smith as a football player and maybe even more could be said about the season he had last year. At least on the latter count, not much of the talk would be uplifting, what with the hamstring injury, the disastrous completion and TD/INT ratios, etc. Then, compounding the negativity, there were the signs from spring practice -- like Smith's tough...

Same Old Story; Vanderbilt Finds Way To Lose

The Vanderbilt Commodores found a way to lose another big game on the road losing 23 to 9 to the LSU Tigers. QB Larry Smith was a terrible 11 of 24 passing for only 88 yards and one INT. Smith carried the ball 13 times  for a negative 6 yards but one touchdown. Zac Stacy had another great game with 20 carries for 89 yards. The freshman is showing that he is going to be a force...

Vandy's QB Situation Ideal

Normally QB controversies seem like divisive things that can hurt a team's rapport, but in the case of Vanderbilt, the battle for the starting position between Larry Smith and Mackenzi Adams has been ideal.Smith was named the starter, which wasn't a big surprise. Although both Smith and Adams had taken snaps with the first-team offense, Smith was going first and also has...

Thoughts on the Western Carolina Game

Saturday was a great night. Vanderbilt looked very impressive, the stadium was pretty packed for kick-off (even if it wasn't by the end of the 3rd quarter), and Tommy Tutone got up on stage at The Stage and played 867-5309/Jenny with the band. The Commodores (and their fans) saw a bright future in the backfield with freshmen running backs Zac Stacy and Warren Norman rushing for...

Vanderbilt Finds Its Quarterback

Larry Smith will start the season opener for the Commodores against Western Carolina on Sept. 5. Coach Bobby Johnson had the following to say about Smith. "He's got a lot of tools to run the offense, to be able to throw the ball downfield." Larry also has presence in the pocket. He sees the field very well and knows what we're trying to do with the offense."...
