North Carolina State’s 2014 football season nearly started with a disaster.
The Wolfpack narrowly edged out the Sun Belt’s Georgia Southern, 24-23, thanks to a 35-yard touchdown pass from Matt Dayes to Jacoby Brissett with 1:37 remaining. A win is a win, though, and NC State heads into Week 2, 1-0.

Shadrach Thornton and Matt Dayes each had long scoring runs during North Carolina State's four-touchdown second quarter, and the Wolfpack routed Central Michigan 48-14 on Saturday.
Thornton finished with 71 yards and his 29-yard scoring run came shortly before Dayes' 42-yard TD for N.C. State - which scored touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams.

Shadrach Thornton’s one-game suspension created an opening day opening on the North Carolina State University's depth chart for the newcomer Matt Dayes.
Freshman Matt Dayes ran for 84 yards and three touchdowns to help North Carolina State beat Louisiana Tech 40-14 on Saturday in its first game under coach Dave Doeren.
Tony Creecy also scored for the Wolfpack (1-0), who scored the first 24 points with Doeren's no-huddle offense and led comfortably all afternoon.
