Virginia quarterback Phillip Sims is no longer on the school’s football roster, according to a statement from the Cavaliers’ website today. Sims started four games last year for the Wahoos, but was rumored to have dropped down the depth chart in the offseason. It would appear that academics also played a role in his departure.
Head coach Mike London had this to say:
The quarterback battle continues for the Virginia Cavaliers. Coach Mike London and starting hopefuls, David Watford, Greyson Lambert and Phillip Sims talked to the media after the Spring game on Saturday. Find out what they had to say here.
Virginia Tech is preparing to face two quarterbacks when it plays Virginia on Saturday.
The Cavaliers (4-7, 2-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) have used Michael Rocco and Phillip Sims pretty much all season, and coach Mike London says it's ''probably safe to say'' that both will play again.
When they do, they will face a pass rush that has been coming on strong...

Early in the first quarter, with Virginia looking at first-and-goal from the 4-yard line, the Cavaliers executed a trick play flawlessly.
Until they didn’t.
Quarterback Phillip Sims took the snap and tossed to running back Perry Jones, who faked like he was running right only to throw the ball back to Sims wide open in the end zone. Only one problem — Sims forgot to catch the...
University of Virginia quarterback Phillip Sims reminded us why the University of Virginia is known more for their pleasant campus and lacrosse team than as a football powerhouse. Kevin Parks rushed for 115 yards and a late 31-yard touchdown for the Cavaliers (3-6, 1-4 Atlantic Coast Conference).
Their defense more than doubled its season total for takeaways with five while holding N.C. State to 19 yards rushing...

Welcome to the Virginia Cavaliers, version 2.0. Whether or not it is the time for a quarterback change, one is being made. After 3 games with increasing issues for Michael Rocco, the Alabama transfer Phillip Sims will get his chance to revive this Wahoo offense. But it is going to take a lot more than a signal caller switch to beat the Blue Devils this weekend. So what kind of battle...
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA -- There is no quarterback controversy at Virginia. None whatsoever.
That doesn't mean Michael Rocco has the job secured for the rest of the season, because if the read on Phillip Sims' breathtaking potential is accurate, he will eventually learn the playbook enough to justify a more viable shot, especially if Rocco struggles.
Rocco struggled some in...
