Haus out at UNC... Who's next?

UNC's head lacrosse coach has been removed from his post... Could Coach Zimmerman be his replacement?

Inside Lacrosse broke the story and did indeed mention Zimmerman in thier original post (which I can't find now). A full list of candidates, real or imagined, is here: http://blogs.insidelacrosse.com/2008/05/27/north-carolina-head-lacrosse-coach-candidates/

My thoughts? Usually, prestigious schools like UNC are all about pedigree, so my first reaction was that UNC would actually be looking for someone from an elite public school or prestigious private school to fill the vacancy. I don't mean to slight UMBC, but this is just how a lot of searches are run in higher education.

Also, though, a lot of times these searches are really local, so you might see some finalists from the ACC, or from lacrosse "mid majors" in the geographic region. And then again, if Zimmerman was mentioned in the original article (and given the connections between Zimmerman and the UNC Athletic Director), it could just as well Zimmerman as the new coach.

I see what you mean, and no offense taken. I'd be inclined to agree, but consider also that Zim's a Hall of Famer and his pedigree is in the years he spent at Hopkins, where he picked up a few national championships. That plus his connection to the AD, I certainly wouldn't count him out.

You're right. The Hall of Fame shine and the Hopkins experience makes him an outstanding candidate, not to mention his previous experience at UNC. Zimmerman has an impressive bio:

So, to take it further, and go back to a question raised in the initial post, what kind of coaching carousel could this start??!?

If Zimmerman is the selection, I don't see it leading to a huge carousel. UMBC's a solid team with a lot of potential on fertile recruiting ground, but it doesn't have the instant name-recognition athletic program like a UNC, Duke, or even Ohio State or Notre Dame (progams that are just plain known, if not necessarily for lax). Thus, I don't necessarily see high-profile coaches scrambling for an open UMBC job--more like a top assistant or a coach from elsewhere in the conference or a similar profile school. If Breschi should get the call, however, I can see quite a carousel taking place.

I was going to say Breschi, although he may be really tied into OSU by this point. I know Joe, but am not familair with Zimmerman. Although, I do think they will go for UNC ties first. Tradition and "family" is very big at UNC.

Zimmerman is staying put at UMBC. Coaches at Ohio State, Navy, and Cornell are rumored to be in the running, now, for the UNC coaching post. According to Inside Lacrosse:

Yeah, I saw that, and went and checked out UMBC's website and sure enough, Coach got a 6 year extension.
