NC Central Graduates Duke Accuser

North Carolina Central University gave Crystal Mangum, the Duke lacrosse accuser, a degree in "police psychology" this past semester. Irony aside, it kind of violates most moral codes. And university specific conduct codes.

Interesting take. I read the article by Butler that this article references, and the general gist is that someone with such egregious Code of Conduct violations as hers should not be allowed to continue at that or any other university. To that, I would point out that the party that started all this (the one at which it has been proven that a rape did NOT take place, to be clear) was a similar type violation. Then, is Duke as horrible an institution as Ms. Butler claims NCCU is?

As for me, I don't fault either university for not flexing their muscle on matters not directly related to their academic mission. I do, however, find the individuals on both sides of this case (the accuser and the accused) pretty disgusting..

There is an overarching tone of privilege and elitism that some of the folks at Duke still doesn't seem to grasp, and that most of the Duke detractors haven't quite been able to articulate (though some have, and very effectively). The racial overtones are also pretty obvious, but I am amazed by the restraint of most of the people who commented on the original editorial (and then commented on those comments).

The originial editorial fails to acknowledge Mike Nifong's culpability in all of this, or how Duke, itself, treated the accused players, how the accused players themselves had other disciplinary problems, or how the players settled with Duke... the two men who didn't graduate from college this year most certainly WILL graduate, and what they'll be able to do with a Duke degree will dwarf whatever Ms. Magnum will be able to accomplish (Ms. Magnum is currently working as a janitor).

I find it very hard to take Ms. Butler's editorial seriously, not only for the reasons above, but because her tone is parochial and paternalistic, and because she basically calls Ms. Magnum a slut who will accomplish nothing in life. She comes thisclose to saying Ms. Magnum is a drug whore with no chance at redemption. And she wants readers to feel empathy for her fellow Dookies...
