Syracuse Wins Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship

Syracuse won a record10th Division I men's lacrosse championship today*, defeating Johns Hopkins 13-10 in front of a crowd of 48,970. The Orange withstood a valiant stand by Paul Rabil, who himself scored six (6) goals for Hopkins. The Orange defense was physical and aggressive, checking and double-teaming whenever possible. The defense was balanced with a vicious offensive attack, with face off specialist Danny Brennan and freshman Stephen Keogh stepping up to score (Brennan's first ever goal), in addition to the scores from usual suspects like Leveille and Hardy. A complete game from the Syracuse Orange.

* Syracuse's 1990 victory is considered "vacated" due to an eligibility violation, however NCAA records still list Syracuse as the 1990 DI men's lax champion. During the broadcast of today's championship, the announcers differentiated between official championships and championships "on the field". So perhaps it it better said that this is Syracuse's 9th official DI title.

The Orange simply outmatched the Blue Jays. The JHU goalie played out of his mind until about halfway through the second quarter, which is why Hopkins had that early lead. But the Orange attack was, like you said, vicious. Simply too good in the open field, though you gotta give it up to Rabil. Great game in a losing effort. That man is a beast when he gets the space to shoot.

Congrats to your team! But isn't this championship #9, after the NCAA forced 1990 to be vacated?

Good point MasonDixon. I edited my headline and article...

Today's title is #10 in my book. Who cares if Paul Gait didn't do his math homework well enough, or whatever it was. They earned the victory on the field, and not by a small margin. I was at that game in 1990. Syracuse simply dominated. They were probably the single-season greatest team ever that year. They won the final 21-9, and that Orange team went 13-0 on the season, winning games by an average of more than 11 goals and only once by fewer than five goals. That's amazing.

The NCAA shouldn't be allowed to vacate title my HS changes grades for wrestlers 8 titles in a row 11 over all

Ask the coaches of the teams that Syracuse beat in 1990 who was champion. I`m sure they will tell you who that it is decided on the field and not by some few on an NCAA panel who don`t want you to know who they are. The 1990 Orange was the best team ever.

Nastiest team I've seen maybe in any sport. For those of you who don't follow lacrosse, this team was arguably more dominant than the Jordan-era Bulls.

SU Lax Rules. Vacated, shmacated...the Orange have 10 NCAA titles in my book.
