On February 8th, 1994, former Indian Cricketer Kapil Dev broke Richard Hadlee’s wicket-taking world record, becoming the world record holder. Dev broke the previous record of 431 wickets by 1 wicket. Not only did he break Hadlee’s record, 35-year-old Dev also famously promised that he would reach at least 450 wickets by the time he retired (he only made it to 434). However, by the time Kapil Dev did retire, he had made quite an impact not only on the cricketing community, but, in fact, all of India. Any Indian from age 5 to age 85 can explain to you that Kapil Dev is essentially considered a national hero. After retiring later that year, Kapil returned to cricket in 2002 and went on to coach the Indian National Cricket team.
