The fallout from Lance Armstrong's reported confession of using performance-enhancing drugs to Oprah Winfrey has already begun. The infamous cyclist allegedly told Winfrey during an interview on Monday, which is set to air on Thursday, that he did in fact use PEDs in order to win the Tour de France. And now, the United States Department of Justice is deciding whether or not to join a lawsuit to reclaim sponsorship money the federal government provided Armstrong from 2001 to 2004. According to the Wall Street Journal, the United States Postal Service provided $30.6 million to Armstrong during that time frame. The federal whistleblower suit was originally filed by former teammate Floyd Landis in 2010. As a whistleblower, Landis could potentially collect 30 percent of any money the government recovers. The government is seeking roughly $100 million in damages. The Justice Department has until Thursday to decide if they want in on the suit, which claims Armstrong defrauded the U.S. government by violating the sponsorship contract agreement by doping. The contract with USPS specifically prohibited riders from taking PEDs while accepting sponsorship money.Armstrong also stopped by the Livestrong Foundation before his interview with Winfrey to tell staff members he was sorry. The apology might just be a classic case of "too little, too late". It remains to be seen how the dominoes will fall once Armstrong publicly confesses his transgressions on Thursday.Via Wall Street Journal.
