Could Dre, Jimmy Iovine and Interscope finally decide to put Detox on store shelves in 2011? The odds are improving since “Kush” has been fairly well-received – or at least not panned like other leaks – and branded as an official single. Dre’s hit us with the okey doke plenty of times around but the chances of a release seem even greater now with an accompanying video attached to the song.
For my tastes, the track still seems pretty tame and, while I haven’t shunned it, the sound hasn’t warmed up even with repeat plays. Snoopy D-O-double-G sounds great, Akon is Akon but Dre’s production doesn’t necessarily live up to the high expectations. The Doc’s been sitting for so long that that my expectations were for a sonic advancement from the next millennium once he emerged and it’s not to be found on “Kush,” which fits today’s musical landscape well but doesn’t stand out like the producer’s usual groundbreaking efforts. Still, I’ll hang around and pay attention to see where all the anticipation leads.
