A jury in Murfreesboro has begun deliberating the murder case against a Middle Tennessee State University student charged in the stabbing of her roommate who was on the basketball team.
Assistant District Attorney Paul Newman said Monday that there's no dispute that Shanterrica Madden stabbed Tina Stewart to death at their apartment in March 2011. He said Madden wants the jury to believe the stabbing was in self-defense but said she was not credible and the killing was premeditated and intentional.
Defense attorney Joe Brandon Jr. said in closing arguments that the death was a result of a series of unfortunate events and Madden acted in self-defense during a physical fight. The jury was selected in Chattanooga.
Madden faces a charge of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence.
