Day Three of The Summer Olympics

Three days into the Olympics ~ the top three metal holders are -

China - 9G, 5S, 3B (17)

US - 5G, 7S, 5B (17)

Japan - 1G, 4S, 6B (11)

Russia, once a powerhouse in the games is currently sitting in 6th place - 2G, 0S, 3B (5). The US Men's Gymnastic team fell way off the radar ~ they all looked sluggish, concentration gone and energy escaped them. They finished 5th in the standings in the Artistic category ~ no metal, which was expected and some of the hype for the evening. Our familiar Women's Beach Volleyball doubles team ~ Misty May-Treanor and Kristyna Kolocova won their two matches against the Czech's last evening ~ with a close call on their second match, 21-19. The twosome were asked about Rio ~ Kristyna said it would be so great to participate. Misty, on the other hand, said she'd be cheering her partner on!  So, that will be a "wait and see" for 2016.

In addition ~ another one of our bright stars of the evening - 17 year old US swimmer from Colorado, Missy Franklin. Missy is the first female to compete in seven events in an Olympics. Last night was double duty for her, and she handled it well. Pacing her speed, she qualified in fourth position in the semi's to go on to the finals of the 200M Freestyle. She was immediately escorted to pool 2, having only 14 minutes to think about her next heat ~ the 100M Backstroke competition. With an escort in tow, badge in hand and no time for the practice pool ~ off she went, barely time to get into position, but stayed the course with a strong performance to come in first for her first Gold metal.  It was a night of disappointment, but also ~ smiles galore, as only Missy can display with hugs from mom and dad.

I know losing is hard to accept, one must work to dismiss the disappointment ~ but just to be among the very best in the world is quite a feat in itself. In the scheme of numbers, and a process of elimination ~ very few are the exclusive of all athletes.

To all ~ may you have a good day. Enjoy the games.Always ~ Elichap
