Summer Olympics begin among other sports in busy sports weekend
good opening weekend in the Summer Olympics in London and other sports action
made it a pretty good weekend to watch sports. The Opening Ceremonies were
pretty good although the lighting of the torch still confused me a bit with
English star lighting it from a boat and then passing it to anothert generation
of seven people lighting the flame. Huh? I like the pass down to the big
national star like Muhammed Ali in 1996 in Atlanta or in 1992 when they shot
the flame in with an arrow in Barcelona. Still the coolest flame lighting I’ve
to the action the Americans have three golds so far two in swimming Ryan Lochte
and Dana Vollmer who set a world record. Then Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps
got a silver medal in the relay and it was Phelphs 17th Olympic
medal in his illustrious swimming career and one off the Olympic record for
medals. Also an American shooter won a medal for the fifth Olympics in a row a
pretty amazing feat.
American womens basketball team won their opener and the American men cruised
to a 98-71 win over a goggled Tony Parker and France. Parker is wearing goggles
because of his nightclub eye injury a month ago. Its kind of weird for me
rooting for Lebron James and Kobe Bryant over Tony Parker (France) and Manu
Ginobli (Argentina) who are on the San Antonio Spurs my favorite NBA team but
play for other countries in the Olympics. But this is the Olympics and James,
Bryant, Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony and others play for the USA and as former
USA hockey coach reminded us the name on the front of the jersey is a hell of a
lot more important than the name on the back a great line from the movie
Miracle about the 1980 USA hockey team that upset the Russians and won the gold
also interesting to watch some other sports that We don’t usually watch outside
of the Olympics like handball, water polo, gymnastics and cycling among many
other sports. Its great for all the athletes and countries to compete. I wish
they would bring back softball and baseball and maybe add golf and bowling. Its
too bad the rest of the world isnt that good at American football but we get
enough of that in this country anyway.
camps opened this weekend and my
favorite team the Pittsburgh Steelers signed one of their wide receivers
Antonio Brown to a five year contract while their other wide receiver Mike
Wallace hasn’yt signed a contract while he tries to work out a new deal with
the Steelers. The Steelers have always been great with two receivers like Lynn Swann
and John Stallworth in the 1970s and Hines Ward and Randall El or Santonio
Holmes this past decade of Super Bowls. So we’ll see what happens there and
around the league.
baseball Zach Greinke got traded by the Brewers to the Angels and then lost 2-0
to the Tampa Bay Rays in the Southern California sun at Anaheim. Grienke hadn’t
lost a home game in a year and a half pitching for the Brewers but lost his
home debut with the Angels. It could be jet lag or sometimes like with Albert
Pujols going to the Angels it takes a while to adjust but he got better and so
will Grienke I think, but I hate seeing another good player leave small market
Milwaukee and the Brewers.
is coming in baseball and severtal teams will continue to fall further out of
the race and we’ll see who can hang on into September in the playoff race. With
two wildcards this year it could be a little more interesting though a lot of
teams I like are falling out of it like the Brewers, Red Sox and Cubs while
some other teams I like such as the Rangers, Dodgers and Pirates are playing
well. So we’ll see what happens and I hope your team does well for you.
enjoy the Olympics in London the next few weeks and we’ll keep track of the
sports on this side of the pond as well.
wishes and talk soon. Bratman
