St. Louis Cardinals SP Wainwright ~ The Man of the Game

Oh, what a night at Busch Stadium for the Cardinals last night! Yes, the Cardinals broke the Dodger's string of wins against them ~ ended Dodger's Kershaw's 19 2/3 inning steak of no runs pitched against them ~ yes, the Cardinals took them out in style in their win, 8-2.

But where did this spark of life come from? Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright. Not only has Wainwright been working to bring his pitching back up to speed after being out most of last season ~ but he got "his bat back"! As the game progressed and the Dodger's had the first 2 runs on the board ~ looked to be yet another game for them to put up a "W" ... but only the fourth inning, anything could happen. Wainwright kept them at bay through the top of the fifth, but then ~ the Cardinals began their "move".  With Descalso on second, Wainwright hits a double into left field just inside the third baseline ~ fair ball and Descalso comes in for score #1. That brought the fans and team alive. Furcal singled to center bringing Wainwright in to tie the game.

To the bottom of the sixth ~ score still tied ~ Kershaw looking a bit wilted in the St. Louis heat....but the Dodger's kept him in. Wainwright's double in the previous inning must have been the inspiration the home team needed. Cardinals Freese singled to center, Holliday scored, Beltran to third. Wainwright, with good eyes took a walk with bases loaded ~ oh, the "hand eye-glasses went up immediately in the dugout ~ Beltran scored, Freese to third, Descalso to second. Furcal hit an infield single to second, Freese scored, Descalso scored, Wainwright to second. That pretty much took care of Dodger's Kershaw off the mound. RP Lindblom came in ~ but was lacking in the damage control department. Cardinals Craig doubled to center, Wainwright scored, Furcal scored. Thus ~ the Dodger's (53-45) are now looking at a Cardinal lead 8-2 and never recouped after that point. It was a very exciting two innings for fans and team, alike. Maybe this is the "prod" the Cardinals needed to get them back on track. With only being five above .500 (51-46) ~ now is the time to make their move...keeping them in the hunt.

Wainwright (8-10) allowed two runs and seven hits with seven strikeouts in 7 1-3 innings.  So not bad for Wainwright's night as pitcher, save the two runs ~ but impressive once again at the plate.  Wainwright gets the win, and CP Boggs gets credit for the save.

Unfortunately, the game was not without injury. Cardinals FB Lance Berkman was hit by pitcher Kershaw on his right knee ~ the one he had surgery on and just recently recently returned to the line-up off the DL. But as Berkman is ~ even though badly bruised, he doesn't seem to concerned. However, he will be on the "day-to-day" DL.

In tonight's pitching match-up, it will be Cardinals SP Lohse, 10-2/2.71 against Dodger's SP Harang, 7-5/3.46.  I just hope all take precautionary measures pertaining to the heat factor. It was 103 degrees at the beginning of last night's game. Reportedly, here in Central IL ~ the high is to be 106 for today. In St. Louis ~ that could very well be = 110 on the field.

Not only did the Dodger's (53-45) take it on the chin in yesterday's play....the Brewer's (44-52) were edged out by the Phillies (44-54), 7-6. The Tiger's (52-45) were topped by the Indians (49-48), 3-2. Texas Ranger's (57-39) were bucked by the Red Sox (49-49), 2-1 at Arlington Park.  Kansas City Royals (41-55) are still hanging in there with a win over the LA Angels (53-45), 4-1. And Chicago southsider's ~ even though they are convinced they truly have a team ~ the White Sox (52-45) take out the Twins (40-57), 11-4. And across a state or two ... the Chicago Cubs (40-56) add to the northender's delight with their second win over the Pirates (54-42), 5-1, in their three game series. Will the Chicago northender's have their brooms out tonight in support remains to be seen.

So, as the second half progresses ~ could be a wild ride for the Wild Card games!  Happy watching!!

Always ~ Elichap
