Asante Samuel Targeted by Philadelphia Eagles

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports Asante Samuel Will be targeted by the Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Jets when he becomes a free agent at the end of this month. Samuel has stated that although he'd like to stay in New England, he will be listening to offers and won't be offering any home team discount. Probably due to the fact he was looking for a long term contract with a large signing bonus (Similar to the one Nate Clements received) last year but did not get due to the Franchise tag he recieved instead. I am curious as to how both Sheldon Brown AND Lito sheperd fit into this, but I am not gonna argue with adding playmakers to the Philadelphia secondary. Sheldon Brown possibly moving to safety? He hits like one.

I've been asking for this since I found out Samuel would be a Free Agent (Right after he picked us off twice this year....damnit). I think the logical move (if we were lucky enough to pick up Samuel) would be to move Sheldon to Safety. Lito has been injury prone over the years but this would provide insurance for him along with strengthening our Secondary to one of the best in the League. Samuel, Lito, Sheldon, and BDawk, WOW. And in the unfortunate even that Lito goes down: Sheldon, Samuel, BDawk, and Mikell/Considine. This would be a great move for the Eagles. As long as Sheldon doesn't start a pity party like last year.

    I like it.

I think that would make us a very nice secondary. Then Maybe take a young corner in the draft late rounder. I think William James is DONE. J. hanson took his spot. Hell go after 2 starting caliber CB's. Lito cannot stay healthy. Now in defense of Sheldon vs. Plaxico.....is it me or do the Eagles need new field turf as well... I have seen a few games where the field was in BAAAAD shape...... the players could not even make cuts and Sheldon got Killed !!!! What do you guys think.

  • I like samuel a lot he is avery good player and i like the idea of brown moving to safety. However samuel will want to much money and i think we should focus on a reciever first then go defense second its not like we're in a salary cap free era. I dont know how much cap room we have this year but we need offense first definitley.

I think they need to aggressively go after Samuel. I feel that a WR is the second most important position to fill. DEFENSE!!!!

this would be great for the eagles if this happens and it probably has potential but im curious if they move sheldon brown to saftey that means they are putting a lot of faith into lito sheppard staying healthy which he hasnt done in the last 2 years. i think they keep sheppard brown and samual all at corner because of the recievers in this division. washington has moss randle ell lloyd (nothing special) yet again james thrash almost beat us
New York has Burres who was a stud all year toomer who seems to always play well against the eagles and the young up and commer smith who played well throughout the playoffs
Dallas has TO crayton and will probably draft another reciever or bring one in through free ageny so all three of these corners could be a huge help to this secondary

Great point, i really think a first or second round pick needs to be spent on a CB/KR.

Damn right this would be a good move, Brown and Shepperd have been sitting comfortably back there for years with no real competition to push them. So if we add someone like Samuel it would make them take notice that big things are expected.

As easy as it is to raise the issue of money its hard to argue with the impact on the Philadelphia secondary that struggled with creating turnovers and depth (some due to injury and some due to will james). Samuel is young, talented AND accomplished (Led the NFL with 10 Interceptions in 06) player. The biggest factor is we want to play in the playhoffs this year. Samuel has more playoff experince than ANY corner in the league

see- this is exactly what i talked about on another phillie post. Asante will be one of the highet paid players in the league next year, and he'll eat up at least a third (maybe more) of their remaining cap room. they aren't gong to get much more than one or two guys...

interesting asante samuel in midnight green.......i love it but will our great organzation take the salary of one of the best players in football?

  • Ok, Philly isn't in the best cap room situation in the league anyways, and there's already talk of them trying to deal Reggie Brown and a draft pick for Roy Williams...
I just don't see them signing a huge FA like Samuel, as well as trading for Williams unless they are planning on trimming alot of fat from their cap (Jevon Kearse, Darren Howard, etc)

WE HAVE TO LAND PLAYERS LIKE THIS TO MAKE TEAMS FEAR US AGAIN. IF HE LANDS IN PHILLY NOBODY WILL WANT TO THROW AGAINST US! A COUPLE MORE MOVES LIKE THIS AND TEAMS WILL FEAR US AGAIN! E-A-G-L-E-S! EAGLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why wouldnt you want to cut Kearse and Howard to get a guy like Asante Samuel? We will get more production and impact from Samuel than Kearse and Howard combined. We can draft cheap youth that can match the production of Kearse and Howard... Maybe get draft picks for them or help at trade package!!

Even if we cut them and I think it will happen this year, they will still have to eat the salary cap this year. Just because the players go away doesn't mean the money doesn't still count against us.

not all contracts are garunteed. thats also why i suggested a potential trade package.

Probably about 80 million, Similar to what Nate Clements received. Which sounds like alot, but breaks down to about 10 mil per for about 8 years... We pay kearse 6+ million. So i feel Asante is worth it.
  • Probably a total of 60 million, maybe more. Shutdown corners aren't cheap.

  • The overall value of the contract is irrelevant as far as the eagles are concerned....whats more important is how much is frontloaded and whats going to be the signing bonus. If its a 8 years 100 mill deal, but only 50 mill is in the next 4 or 5 years thats the only thing that matters. Do it Eagles.

  • I think we could use Asante Samuel. Since sheppard is always injured we need a star DB.

He wants more than what Nate received in total comp. last year. In other words too much for the Eagles to spend.
